Several days have passed since Bryce returned home. Monaco is a beautiful place to visit but getting back to his home in the Hollywood Hills is always preferred. After finding the lost statue of Artemis and being thrown from a moving train, it seemed like a good idea to just sit around the house and concentrate on healing.
Bryce pours himself a cup of coffee and steps out onto the patio of his palatial home. It’s a fairly clear day, better than most anyway, the marine layer is finally breaking up allowing the Los Angeles skyline to come into view . He reaches to set his coffee cup on the patio table and is quickly reminded of the wound that got stitched up a week ago but has still not fully healed. He sets his coffee down more gingerly, sits down and stares off into the distance. He wonders what Amelia is up to these days. He hasn’t seen her or talked to her for four days. Which is unusual considering she lives in the spacious guest house on the far side of the property. Usually the two of them are inseparable. She has been his assistant for several years and they have developed a great professional relationship. Friends and colleagues of theirs have often wondered how the two of them never became close friends or even lovers.
The silence is broken by a voice calling out - “Did you pour me a cup?” Amelia says as she walks around the large hedge between her house and the main house - with some papers in her hand.
“No I didn’t, I wasn’t even sure I was going to see you today”
“Yeah I get that. I’ve been taking it easy. Figured you were too”
She lays the papers on the table and then walks into the kitchen and pours herself a cup of coffee and returns to the patio.
“Have you been browsing the news or talking to any of your contacts?” she asks.
“No not really, I’ve been thinking too much about this scar I’m going to have” as he lifts his shirt to show her the stitches in his side.
“Oh, yeah, that’ll be a good one. Matches the one on your back.”
“Don’t remind me” he lowers his shirt.
Amelia picks up the papers on the table and leafs through them. “I’ve been doing some digging and I have found a few interesting things that would make for a good bit of fun.”
“I figured you had when I saw you with those papers.” he holds out his hand as she hands him the papers. He scans the pages for a few minutes shaking his head from time to time as he often does. "You have out done yourself this time, three unrelated - possible cases instead of the usual one.”
Amelia sips her coffee and glances at him over her cup. “What do you think?”
Bryce turns to look out in the distance and ponders for a moment - “You know how I like recovering lost or stolen art. Usually these jobs are less dangerous. That sounds pretty good right now. Find out who is counterfeiting the hundred dollar bills is different. Isn’t this a job for the Secret Service?”
“Well, yes you’re right. But that one might take us to Egypt, possibly Cairo. I’d love to get back there.“ she smiles
“Cairo is so hot this time of year.”
“It’s always hot there. It would be good to see mom and dad again. It’s been a while. What about the missing one of a kind racecar?” Amelia asks
“Oh, come on, that goes without saying. We have no idea where we would even begin or where it would take us. Of course, that could be a bonus. If we find it, I might get to drive it. This is interesting it’s a Ferrari 166 MM” his faces lights up ad he reads further.
“What is that? Is that some sort of hyper car turned into a racer?”
“Oh, no. This is a car that was built in the 50’s if I remember right.” He continues to scan the papers. “Oh wow!”
“What?”
“It’s red, I mean, of course it is!”
“So should I get Kansas on the phone?” Amelia reaches for her phone
“I’m not sure Kansas would be helpful here, but yeah, give him a call and see what he can find for us”
Amelia dials Kansas and puts him on speaker.
“Hello.”
“Hi Kansas, It's Amelia I’ve got you on speaker with Bryce.”
"Hey there, what's on your radar this time?"
“World domination, winning a Nobel, you know, the usual stuff” Bryce says.
"How can I help?"
"We are thinking about the next job and this one is to recover a lost or stolen car, not sure which just yet, it’s a 1950’s Ferrari 166MM. The owner is a German guy, keeps his car in Germany but lives in Milan. His name is Wilhelm Kline, Can you get some more info for me and get back to us?”
“Yeah sure, do you have the chassis number or any other details?”
“Not at the moment. I’ve just done the basic fact finding.” Amelia adds.
“Yeah, I’m on it. I’ll add what I find to the server.”
“Sounds good, talk to you later.” Bryce ends the call.
“Okay then, I guess we will recover the car.” Bryce hands the papers back to Amelia. “Get in touch with Lorelei and Courtney and see how they can help us.”
“Okay, I will. As soon as I see any info on the server from Kansas I’ll text you.” she adds
“Sounds good. I’m going to get some lunch and then later today I have a doctor’s appointment to get these stitches removed.”
“Good luck with that.” Amelia stands up, gathers the papers and heads back to her place.
As with most days, especially Saturdays, Bryce doesn’t know what day of the week it is. Walking into his office with coffee cup in hand he logged onto his computer to check if any progress had been made by Kansas. He expected to see several files and hopefully some images or videos of the crime scene. There were three documents and a few short videos, all of them related to the owner and the car.
The first file read - The owner of the stolen Ferrari goes by the name Wilhelm Klein and was born in Haiger Germany in 1950, making him 74 years old, He lived in Haiger until he was 24 years old. Then he moved to Milan Italy. By age 25 Wilhelm had started a business in the mining industry and had amassed a sizable fortune. With his fortune he had started a car collection that included many exotic cars - with a current total value of over $20M. All of his collection is stored in a facility much like a museum located in Milan. Wilhelm never married. Has no brothers or sisters and his parents have passed. His contact info is in the file called Wilhelm.info
His Ferrari was stolen on May 13, 2021 from Wilhelm’s car museum in Milan and reported the next day. Security camera footage from the very elaborate security system stops 5 minutes before the robbery then starts again 10 minutes later. If you look at the videos in the folder you will see short clips from traffic cameras in the area surrounding the museum. They picked up a basic white box truck with several company stickers on it - all fictitious. The truck was definitely big enough to hide a Ferrari - it pulls into an ally - then other cameras see three identical trucks with no markings leaving the area - no way to tell which one could have been the real truck with the car. All three trucks were located in the days following the robbery. There was no fingerprints or DNA found.
Wilhelm has 2 items of interest in his past. He was investigated in a crash on May 10, 1971. He was driving his car when he lost control and crashed into a pole. He suffered minor injuries but his female passenger was badly injured and later died in the hospital on the morning of May 13. Her name was Rose Russo. Because this was ruled as an accident no criminal charges were filed. Wilhelm was arrested for public intoxication later that same day. The report on file also mentions that there was an altercation with another person - Sebastian Braun. No charges were filed.
On a hunch I looked into Sebastian Braun - he and Wilhelm were best of friends from a young age and together they co-owned a small startup company selling mining equipment. They had started this company in 1970 and Sebastian was his partner until suddenly they sold the company in 1972. The business was doing rather well. No other records indicate that they were in business together again.
Wilhelm’s business ventures are strong and he seems to be well funded and completely above board. His net worth is estimated to be $150M. His company has a presence in many countries, mostly in Europe. Five years ago the board of his company attempted a hostile takeover. They were unsuccessful and as a result one member of the board was ousted. Their parting was not amiable and the buildings security had to get involved and local law enforcement were dispatched. The ousted member was caught on camera as saying - “You don’t have the guts to tell everyone about your past, I know you have a secret and I will find out!” This was all documented on the evening news.
The car is a red 1950 Ferrari 166MM valued at about $10M on the high end. About 50 were built. The chassis number is 00021
Amelia walked into the office, sat down at a keyboard next to Bryce, logged in and started reviewing the files and asked “So what have you found out?”
“Kansas has done some good work, dug up some interesting stuff”
“Do you know where the car is?”
“No, not yet. But I know where to start looking.”
“Las Vegas?” Amelia’s face lit up.
“What is it with you and Las Vegas?”
“I like Vegas, sue me”
“According to Kansas, the car was stolen from a car facility or museum in Milan.”
“Italy?”
“Is there another?”, Bryce gave her a rather demeaning look
“There is a Milan Michigan and Tennessee. As well as Italy”
“Yes, Italy!” Bryce cut her off abruptly
“Should I get the plane ready?”
“Not yet, I want to see what I can find out about the night the car was stolen.”
Bryce leans back in his chair with his hands clasped behind his head, looks at Amelia and says “We need to see the evidence collected at the scene and who was the inspector assigned to the case. See if Lorelei can help us out.”
“I’m not sure she has any contacts with the Milan Police but I’ll get in touch with her.”
“If that is a dead end, reach out to Courtney, in fact maybe you should talk to her first.”
“Yeah that sounds like a good idea”
“Has Kansas provided contact info for Wilhelm Klein?”
Amelia gets Kansas on a video conference. “Hi Kansas, I’m here with Bryce. Did you get any contact info for Wilhelm?”
“I’m working on that now. All I’ve found so far is his corporate stuff. Probably won’t be much help. Oh wait, just found something, I’ll add it to the Wilhelm.info file.”
Amelia opens the file and looks at Bryce “Kansas found an email and a phone number, it’s in the file.”
“Great, I’ll give a call here in a few. It’s a bit late in Milan but you never know”
“I talked to Courtney and she is trying to get some of the reports from the police department. She might have to toss around some cash” Amelia said
“Yeah, standard for us it seems”
Kansas interrupts - “I just put a few more files out there. These are the police reports on the accident that Wilhelm had when he was 21, I’m not sure why but I got a feeling about this, I feel like it’s tied in.”
Bryce opens the new file and goes through all the details. Certainly one of his strengths is his ability to make connections that others would miss. If he didn’t solve mysteries he would make a great chess player, always thinking 8 or 10 moves ahead. “Well it appears that there was no good leads on the trucks. There were all wiped clean and all stolen in the week leading to the night the car was stolen.”
“Alright I’m going to go make some phone calls and I’ll let you know what I find out.” Amelia gets up and walks to the door.
Bryce pulls out his phone and dials Wilhelm, instead of a man answering, a female voice says. “Klein Industries, May I help you?”
“Hello, My name is Bryce Williams and I am trying reach Wilhelm Klein. Is he available?”
“No, I’m afraid he’s not. Can I take a message Mr. Williams?”
“Yeah, my team and I recover lost and stolen property. I want to talk to him about his Ferrari 166MM. I believe I can help him.”
“Oh I see, I’m sure Mr Klein will want to speak with you. I have your number on my caller ID, Is that the best number to reach you?
“Yes it is.”
“Wilhelm will be back in the office on Tuesday, I’ll give him your message.”
“Ok, thank you very much.”
“Have a nice day”
“Thanks, goodbye” Bryce ends the call.
Just as Bryce hung up the phone, another file appeared on the server from Kansas. In the file it contained more information from police reports. Particularly about the spot where the Ferrari was on display in Wilhelm’s museum. Near the front of the platform stood a pedestal that held a plaque that told a little bit of the cars history. Around that plaque was a wooden frame. In that frame was a faint impression in the wooden frame in the shape of a rams head. Hanging on the pedestal was a silver chain with a ring with a rams head on it. This same exact ring and chain - with the same rams head appeared at 5 other crime scenes involving the theft of high dollar items. One painting, two cars, a necklace and a solitary diamond. Each item worth at least $5M. None of those thefts were ever solved. Because the first theft took place in Spain - Interpol starting calling this thief Oveja.
Tuesday morning finally arrives and Bryce and the team had not learned much more about Wilhelm or the location of the car. As Bryce pours his morning cup of coffee his cell phone rings. The country code is 39 - the country dialing code for Italy.
“Hello, this is Bryce”
“Hello Mr. Williams, this is Wilhelm Klein. I got your message. You have some information about my Ferrari?”
“I don’t have any substantial information but I have been reviewing the information I can get my hands on.”
“I’m a little confused. Why exactly are you looking into this?” By the sounds of Wilhelm’s voice anyone could tell he was intrigued.
“My team and I solve crimes that seem to be unsolvable and we learned about your stolen Ferrari and I want to find your car.”
“The Milan police have looked into this and they don’t have a whole lot of leads and the case went cold.”
“Yes I figured that was what happened. With your permission I would like to reopen the case, so to speak and hopefully find your car.”
“What is this going to cost me?” “There are no up front fees. When the car is returned to you we ask for a ‘finders fee’ of approximately ten percent of the value of the car.”
“That’s interesting. Why would you do that? I mean that doesn’t seem like a good business model. If you never find the car you stand to lose a lot of money.”
“That is true but we have a pretty good track record. There has been only one case when we weren’t successful.”
Wilhelm pauses for several moments then replies, “Alright then, you find the car and return it to me and I will pay you fifteen percent.”
“Fifteen percent? That’s a generous offer. I’ll have my assistant send over some documents for you to sign. You should have then within the hour.
“I’ll look for those and get them looked at by my attorney.”
“That sounds good, let me ask you a question - do you have any idea who might have stolen you car?”
Mr. Klein paused for several seconds then finally replied “I really don’t.”
“Alright, If you think of anything please send us whatever you can. Use the same email that the documents are sent from.”
“I will. Thank you Mr. Williams.”
‘You’re welcome. Good bye”
Bryce hung up the phone and stared at the computer monitor for a few moments. Thinking to himself - Something didn’t seem right. This case has been investigated for quite a long time. Mr Klein paused for a while when asked if he had any idea who might have stolen the car. At this point he should be pretty sure about that question. Something in his past must be tied to this, is he protecting someone? Who might that be? An old friend or family member. Perhaps a former board member that was ousted during the hostile take over attempt. These people could be easily overlooked by the inspector in Milan. It seems that it is time to go to Milan. If Mr. Klein is as big of a business man as he seems, getting the Milan Police to cooperate might be easier than usual.
“Amelia!” Bryce looks up from the monitor he was staring at.
“Yeah!” Amelia walks into the room.
“Talk to Lorelei, we’re going to Milan. Get the jet ready.”
“Who all is going?”
“You, me and Courtney.”
“When are we leaving?”
“As soon as possible.”
“Alright, I’ll text you when I have a hard date and time.”
The day has finally arrived for the team to fly to Milan. It’s several hours worth of flight time with two stops, one near New York and one in London for fuel before reaching Malpensa which is just a few miles outside of Milan. The Gulfstream G280 is quite comfortable but does not have the range of the larger models. It doesn’t have the cost of the larger ones either. There will also be the need for backup pilots.
Amelia picked up her phone to checked if she had missed a call, text or email. The only missed item was an email from the auto warranty folks. She sat her phone back on the table next to her coffee. About halfway through her coffee her phone sounded a text message’s arrival. She glanced over at the phone and noticed the text is from Scott. This text definitely required a look.
“How have you been?” It began. “So when are you leaving for Milan?
“I’m good. We leave at 4:30”
“You flying coach?”
“No, of course not.”
“I expect to have my package by the weekend.”
“You’ll have your package just like I promised.”
“Don’t forget, I can track your phone whenever I want.”
“I remember. Here’s a question, what if I lose my phone?”
“I would be very careful. You wouldn’t want to do that. What airport you flying into?”
“Malpensa.”
“Text me when you arrive.”
“We have two stops so be patient.”
“I’m not known for my patience but you already know that. I won’t be meeting you. I’m still working on that detail. I’ll text you when I know.”
Amelia walks to the spare room and slides the closet door open where her safe sits and dials in the combination and opens the door. Reaching for a gray plastic carry case she pulls it out and opens it to reveal a small black box about the size of a sunglass case. The black box has, what looks like a power switch, and three LED lights on the face. Just below the LEDs is a small screen about the size of an Apple Watch. On the bottom is a data port but no data port that Amelia has ever seen before. “Amazing how such a small box can be worth $5M to someone.” She smiles and puts the box back in the carry case and then puts the carry case back in the safe and closes the door. The latches clunk back into the locked position. She spins the dial and walks out of the room. Her phone sounds off as another text message arrives, this time from Bryce.
“Let’s leave for the airport around 2:30, I want to have a little extra time before take off. As usually Rich will be our pilot and Evan will be his co-pilot. Mark and Jake will be the backup crew. Rich has informed me that our window for departure is pretty tight. Busy day at the airport I guess.”
“Do we really need a backup crew?”
“To stay legal we do. Rich and Evan could do the entire trip but that’s not compliant with the FAA.”
“That sounds good to me. I’ll arrange for pickup here at the house at 2:00.” Amelia responded.
“Perfect.”
Rich had been the pilot for Bryce for many years. He had flown for 20 years in the Royal Air Force before becoming Bryce’s pilot. He was also the pilot for one other company jet. He split his time between the two. Amelia had met Rich in a pub in London several years ago during one of her and Bryce’s adventures. He had just retired and was looking for new opportunities after his time with the RAF. They hit it off and became good friends. Rich signed on as Bryce’s pilot about 3 months later. It was not uncommon for Amelia and Rich to spend off time with each other despite their difference in age. Evan was a younger pilot having only been flying for about 6 years. He was reliable and competent. Good qualities in a pilot or first officer.
Amelia sat at the kitchen table and stared at the clock on the wall. It seemed as thought it wasn’t even changing. There wasn’t much time left to get ready to leave, at least not how Amelia measured time. Just as she was about to get moving, a text arrived. It’s from Holly. Amelia’s heart rate shot up, she could feel her face flush, her hands began to tremble and she almost dropped the phone.
“Hello Amelia, this is Holly. I got a new number figured you had blocked my last number. I’ve been working for Scott for a while now in case you’re wondering. Scott text me and wants me to pick up the package you have for him when you arrive in Malpensa.”
Amelia didn’t want to respond at all but If she didn’t then Holly would let Scott know and then all kinds of bad things would happen. She struggled to come up with the right response. She typed several messages and erased them as fast as she wrote them. It has been over a year since Amelia left Holly at the train station in Antwerp. Amelia knew that Holly would be captured and possibly tortured, but Holly was good at getting out of these situations. Surely she has forgiven her for that. After all, Holly is well trained in hand to hand combat, she could take care of herself. “You can do this Amelia, just keep it simple.” she tried to talk herself down just a bit. Finally she summoned the courage to type a response and hit send. “I hope you’ve been doing well. I will see you in Malpensa.”
In a mere 2 seconds a reply from Holly arrived as if she had it waiting to send.
“In case you’re wondering, I haven’t forgotten Antwerp” Holly replied.
Not knowing how long she would be in Milan, Amelia was forced to pack a bit heavier than she otherwise would. Special care would need to be needed to secure the package. No one can find out what she is doing. Bryce has no idea what she has been doing. Having finished packing, getting all her bags moved to the front door, she headed over to the main house with one large suitcase in tow to see if Bryce needed any help.
“Bryce, are you about ready, do you need help?”
“I’m just finishing up. Give me about 5 minutes.”
“Alright, I’m going to bring the rest of my bags over.”
“Rest of - what does that mean?”
“There are only 5 this time.”
“Okay that’s not too bad.”
Bryce finished getting all his bags zipped up and brought them to the front door where he found Amelia’s bags.
“Have you heard from Rich yet” Amelia asked.
“Yeah, everything seems to be on schedule. They’re doing their pre-flight inspection and getting the plane fueled up. The backup flight crew is there as well.”
“Who are the backup crew?”
“Mark and Jake.”
“Okay.”
“The car should be here in about 15. Courtney will be here in 5.”
“Great”
Courtney’s car pulls into the driveway and parks off to the side of of the main garage. She gets out of the car and walks toward the trunk of her car. The limo pulls in and parks nearby. Courtney unloads her bags and the driver of the limo helps her load her bags. “Hey you two, how are things?” Courtney asks.
“We’re on time so that’s a good thing.” Bryce helped Courtney with her bags.
“Hi Courtney.” Amelia waved.
“Hi Amelia, good to see you.”
Courtney opened a file folder that she retrieved from her bag and began reading to Bryce. “We have everything lined up for Milan. I contacted the Inspector in charge of the investigation on the case of the stolen Ferrari. His name is Antonio De Luca. He is willing to meet with us so that’s a good thing.” Courtney was always prepared and thinking ahead, probably a result of her training as a CIA field agent.
“Yeah, that’s good news.” Bryce finished moving all the bags and gets in the limo, sliding over to allow room for Amelia and Courtney.
They ride in silence for the first 15 minutes and then Bryce asks “So Courtney, have any of your contacts offered up any leads or other information?”
“Not yet, I put out the word that I was looking for more information on this but it’s all quiet”
“With all your CIA friends I was thinking you would have solved this already!”
“I’ve been working on this but there isn’t a lot of details. This - Oveja I guess they are calling him or her - or whatever- not even Interpol has much on him. Mainly just that he’s the same person responsible for all six thefts.”
“That’s not encouraging. This will be tougher than I was hoping.”
“I’ll stay with it and see what happens .”
The rest of the car ride to the airport was quiet and relatively uneventful. They pulled up to the terminal for the private jets and a ramp worker showed up in an electric cart to take them and their luggage to the plane. As the ramp worker loaded their luggage - their pilot and co-pilot emerged from the plane to greet them.
“Good afternoon Mr. Willlams”
“Hello Rich - Evan how’s everything looking?”
“We’re all fueled up, our flight plan has been filed and approved to Teterboro Airport. I’ll file a new flight plan to Heathrow when we land. Flight time is about 5 hours 30 minutes. We can get you on board and get ready to light the engines in about 15 minutes.”
“Perfect!”
Rich motions toward the stairs of the plane and as the Amelia and Courtney approach he holds out his hand to assist them onto the stairs. The backup pilots follow and close the door to the plane then move to the back of the plane away from Bryce, Amelia and Courtney. The ramp worker moves the cart out of the way and takes a position in front of the plane where the pilot can see him. The auxiliary power unit comes to life and the pilots begin their engine start check lists.
Amelia turns to Bryce and gets his attention “I just got some more info. Kansas has done some more digging and found out that the person that Wilhelm had the altercation with following the crash he had in 1971, Sebastian Braun and the woman killed in the crash were lovers and”
“Wait a minute!” Bryce interrupts “Rose and Sebastian were lovers? What was she doing in the car with Wilhelm that night? That could be a little suspicious.”
“That’s a good question”
“I guess that explains the altercation between Wilhelm and Sebastian. I would definitely be upset. Does Kansas have any more info on Sebastian? I’d like to talk to him.”
“I’ll let Kansas know.”
Holly sips her coffee as she sits outside a cafe in Paris. Her phone goes off, a text from Scott.
“Amelia’s plane should be landing at Malpensa tomorrow sometime. As soon as I get more accurate data. I’ll let you know. I know you two have history, is there going to be a problem?”
“No there will not be a problem until it becomes a problem.”
“Why don’t I believe you? Get the package and get it to me in Athens.”
“I will. Maybe I’ll give her a scar to match the one I got when I was tortured because she left me in Antwerp.”
“No, don’t do that. We don’t want to tip off Bryce that anything is going on. Get the package and slip out without being noticed.”
“Maybe I’ll just ruin her situation she has going on with Bryce.”
“I need her to stay working with Bryce. His flying all over the world is my best way to move merchandise.”
“Alright, alright”
The ramp worker signals to Rich to start engine one then engine two. Once both engines are running the pilots finish their checklists. With the door of the cockpit open the passengers can hear all the communications going on.
Evan speaks into his mic “Ground control - November Victor Echo Gulf one seven ready to taxi.”
“November Victor Echo Gulf one seven - ground control ,taxi to runway 24-right via Juliet - hold short”
“Taxi via Juliet hold short runway 24-right - November Victor Echo Gulf one seven”
The engines throttle up and the plane starts to roll. In a few minutes the plane is waiting on the taxi way just short of runway 24-right for their turn to take off.
“Ground control - November Victor Echo Gulf one seven holding short runway 24-right.”
“November Victor Echo Gulf one seven - ground control, position and hold contact tower 120.35 have a good day”
The plane rolls onto the runway and the pilots wait for take off clearance. Soon the tower calls
“Los Angeles Tower this is November Victor Echo Gulf one seven runway 24-right ready for take off”
“November Victor Echo Gulf one seven Los Angeles Tower cleared for take off.”
Evan responds “November Victor Echo Gulf one seven on the go”
Rich pushes the throttles full forward and the plane begins to accelerate.
Evan calls out “Airspeed’s alive” then “V1” and finally “rotate”
Rich pulls back on the yoke and the plane lifts off the runway. A few seconds later Rich says “Gear up” followed shortly by “flaps up”
The plane takes off over the Pacific Ocean and then makes a right turn towards its next stop. The flight crew stay busy with flight operations as the plane climbs to its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet and then levels off.
It’s late at night in Milan as Wilhelm closes the file folder on his desk and takes his glasses off and rubs his eyes. He contemplates how much information he wants to share with Bryce and his team. He does want his car back but at what cost. It has been several years since the car was stolen and ever since that day he has finally been able to sleep through the night. He glances at a photo on the wall of Sebastian, Rose and him at the Eiffel Tower. They were much younger then and all so happy. He wishes he could go back in time to when they were all friends and enjoying life. Happiness is a fleeting and rare thing to have in life and all the money and possessions in the world can’t replace that. A lesson he has learned all too well.
“I am going to go see if the passengers need anything.” Rich says to Evan.
“Sounds good.” Evan positions his hands on the controls and feet on the rudder pedals.
“Your aircraft.”
“My aircraft.” Evan responds
Rich takes his hands and feet off the controls and slides his seat back. He gets up and enters the cabin. “How’s everyone doing? Can I get you something.” Rich glances around at each of the passengers.
“I’m good” Bryce gives a thumbs up.
“Me too” nods Amelia.
“What do we have for drinks on board?” Courtney asks.
“Well we have some juices, wine, some gin and some vodka.” Rich opens the cabinet to see what else might be available.
“Rich, take a break. Stretch your legs, I got this” Courtney gets up and makes her way to the cabinet.
“I think I will take a bathroom break.”
Rich emerges from the rear of the plane and makes his way back to the cockpit, leans in and asks Evan, “Do you wants anything?”
“I’m good, thanks. I still got my water here.”
Rich sits down in the left seat and checks over their flight path and scans the gauges.
The reminder of the flight to Teterboro is uneventful. Bryce and his team discuss what things they want to do while in Milan. Amelia suggests visiting a few clothes shops while Courtney just wants to focus on the task at hand and get back to LA. The approach into Teterboro is as perfect as anyone would expect. The plane gets refueled and back in the air headed toward Heathrow with Mark and Jake at the controls. It’s getting later in the evening and the flight to Heathrow will take 7 hours so the passengers try to get some rest. The sun will rise halfway to Heathrow. The approach and landing to Heathrow goes flawlessly. Soon they are refueled and back in the air with Rich and Evan back at the controls. The flight time to Malpensa is about 2 hours. Barely enough time to get up to a cruising altitude. As they get close to Malpensa, Rich and Evan go through their pre landing briefing and get the plane configured for landing. All is going as expected until Rich calls for the landing gear to be lowered.
“Gear down.”
“Gear transitioning” Evan grabs the lever that controls the landing gear and moves it down. The whir of the hydraulic motors that feed power to the landing gear sounds normal, but things are far from normal.
Evan waits for the three green lights that indicate that all of the gear are down and locked. The two lights for the main gear turn green but the light for the nose gear doesn’t illuminate. “Two green, the nose gear isn’t locked.”
“Do a lamp check.”
“Right” Evan pushes the button labeled “Push to Test” next to the three landing gear lights. All three light up. “All lamps are working”
The passengers had woke up as the plane started to descend. Now they hear the conversation in the cockpit.
“What’s happening Rich?” Bryce calls out.
“We don’t have the nose gear locked, the bulb is working though.”
Mark and Jake make their way to the front of the plane to see if there is anything they can do.
“Contact Malpensa tower and inform them of our situation.” Rich stays calm and focuses on solving this issue. He has had a similar issue a few times in his many hours of flying in the RAF.
“Malpensa Tower - November Victor Echo Gulf one seven”
“November Victor Echo Gulf one seven - Malpensa Tower go ahead”
“Malpensa Tower - we are experiencing an issue - the nose gear isn’t locked - we are executing a missed approach.”
“Are you declaring an emergency?”
“Negative”
“Fly heading 010 and hold right at Novara.”
Rich turns the plane and heads toward the navigational aid so they can begin the check list for a failed nose wheel. After going through the checklist twice, the nose wheel light will not come on.
Rich turns his head toward the cabin and says “We have executed the checklist twice and we can’t get the nose gear to lock.”
Bryce responds “What are our options?”
“I want to try and get the plane in a shallow dive then pull up hard, that will put some extra force on the gear and might get it to lock.“Everybody stay in your seats and pull those belts tight.”
After talking to Malpensa Tower to get approval for the next maneuver to get the gear locked, Rich begins a shallow dive and once the airspeed is right he pulls back on the yoke and the plane noses up. The passengers can feel their bodies pressed into their seats. Amelia’s face shows how unpleasant this sensation is for her.
“Still no green light.” Evan announces.
“Alright, I’m going to give it one more try. This time with a bit more force. Get ready back there, this one is going to be a bit rougher”
“We’re ready.” Bryce says.
Amelia reaches for an air sick bag in the pocket of her seat and braces herself. Courtney just sits there as if nothing is happening.
Rich puts the plane in a steeper dive this time and pulls back even harder on the yoke. The plane pitches up and the force pushing everyone into their seats is much more than before. The plane levels off and everyone waits to hear is the maneuver was successful.
“Still no green light.” Evan reports.
“Contact tower and tell them we want to over fly the runway so tower can take a look at the nose gear.” Rich says.
Evan contacts the tower and they approve a fly by. Rich lines the plane up on the runway heading and flys by. The tower uses binoculars and takes a look at the nose gear.
“November Victor Echo Gulf one seven - Tower.”
“Go ahead tower.”
“The gear looks locked.”
“Copy tower, we are ready to land, have emergency services standing by.”
“How can this be happening?” Amelia is visibly shaken from this whole experience. She uses her airsick bag right as Rich makes a steep turn.
Bryce tries to calm her down “Rich and Evan are good pilots. They will get us through this. Plus the tower says the gear looks locked.”
“I know they are but” she has to use her air sick bag one more time.
Rich circles back around and lines the plane up for a landing.
Rich briefs Evan and the passengers “I’ll come in slow and keep the nose up for as long as I can to try and bleed as much speed as possible.”
Evan calls out altitude and airspeed. “500 feet, 400 feet, 130 knots, 300 feet, 125 knots, 200 feet, 100 feet 50 feet”
The passengers hold their breath waiting for this all to be over.
As they speed down the runway at just 5 feet off the ground fire trucks can be seen along the runway. Rich touches the main gear down and keeps the nose up until there is no turning back. As the plane slows the nose begins to drop. Eventually the nose gear touches down. The gear holds.
“Yeah! Good job Rich” Bryce yells as the rest of the passenger clap in approval.
The color slowly returns to Amelia’s face.
Rich taxis the plane to the terminal and begins the engine shutdown process. Mark opens the door and assists the passengers off the plane. Bryce and the team glance over at the nose gear to see if anything looks odd. Not that anyone really knows what they are looking for. Nothing seems out of place.
Amelia’s phone vibrates, she pulls it out and reads the text from Holly. “I see you have landed. That looked exciting.”
“Yes we have. Exciting doesn’t even begin to describe it. Where are you?”
“I’m inside the terminal. Meet me in the bathroom, straight in and turn left.”
Amelia grabs her smallest bag with the package in it and says “I’m going to use the restroom” and starts walking toward the terminal as she pops a breath mint in her mouth.
Bryce and Courtney walk over to the nose gear where the four pilots are circled around talking about possible solutions.
“I’ll get in touch with the maintenance people and get this looked at. I’ll tell them to put a rush on it.” Rich says
“Yeah let me know.”
Bryce and Courtney turn and walk to the terminal as the four pilots finish securing the plane and take care of the luggage.
Amelia’s stomach is in more knots than when they were coming in for the landing. She opens the bathroom door to see Holly leaning against the wall. She steps in and closes the door and locks it behind her. “Hello Holly.” Before she could finish getting the words out of her mouth Holly grabs her and pins her against the wall. Holly forces Amelia’s hand against the wall above her head and presses firmly against her hips. Amelia doesn’t resist, knowing that there isn’t much she could do anyway. Holly’s face is mere inches away from Amelia’s face.
“It’s been a long time Amelia, did you miss me?” Holly stares into Amelia’s eyes.
“Yes I have”
“Why didn’t you ever try and call me?”
“I felt so bad about Antwerp and I figured I should just lay low. I was scared.”
“You should be scared! Just so you know I missed you.” Holly leans in and kisses Amelia on the lips, catching her off guard but she doesn’t hesitate to kiss her back. Holly’s hand wanders toward Amelia’s thigh, then Holly pulls away.
“You have a package for me?”
Amelia’s mind is spinning. This was not the way she thought this would go.
“Yes, I have it right here. We better hurry.” Amelia reaches into her bag and retrieves the case and hands it to her. Holly opens the case to verify its contents.
“Scott has been waiting for this. I’m sure he will be in touch.”
“You better go!”
Holly walks toward the door but before she opens it she turns to Amelia and winks at her “I’ll be seeing you.”
“Goodbye” Amelia sighs in relief. She cleans the lipstick off her face and exits the bathroom.
Everyone has their own method of trying to deal with jet lag. Some stay up for long hours while some might catch an hour of sleep and just push on til a time that aligns with the new timezone. Bryce, Amelia and Courtney used all these methods to try and get their sleep schedules right. The next morning is a bright sunny day in Milan with a temperature of 81 degrees. A near perfect day for being out and traveling around the city. The team gathers in the lounge of their hotel to discuss the days events. The hotel has been around for quite a few years and has that old world feel. Just what you want when visiting. There are many chairs and small tables for the quests to sit and enjoy a morning coffee and some brioche. Bryce all already has some breakfast and Courtney joins them soon after he sits down.
“How is everyone this morning?” Bryce asks as Courtney walks up.
“Better than I was at least.” Courtney responds “Yeah I’m good. Ready to go! What’s the move?”
“I’m going to finish my coffee and while I’m doing that I will call Wilhelm and set up a time when we can meet with him.” Bryce picks up his cup and takes a sip.
“I’m going to go get an espresso - I mean a coffee. I forgot that’s not a good idea here.” Amelia turns and heads to the coffee counter on the other side of the hotel lounge.
“I’ll go with you.” Courtney follows Amelia.
Wilhelm goes over his calendar for the day, as he reads his emails and glances at his assistant sitting on the other side of desk. Lani has been working for Wilhelm since 2018. Wilhelm has grown to trust Lani’s instincts and judgement. She runs the office when Wilhelm is away, which is frequent.
“We should be getting a call from Mr. Williams sometime today.” Wilhelm says
“I’ll be expecting his call.” Replied Lani
“According to his last email, he is traveling with two other members of his team. Amelia and Courtney. Send my car to pick them up whenever they are ready to meet. In fact, they can use the car whenever the need to. Let Robert know. I’ll drive myself.”
Lani writes down a few notes, then the phone rings. Lani moves around the desk and picks up the handset. “Mr. Klein’s office, this is Lani.”
“May I speak with Mr. Klein please?”
“Who is calling?”
“Inspector Antonio De Luca.”
“One moment.” Lani presses the hold button on the phone and says to Mr. Klein “It’s Inspector Antonio De Luca.”
“I’ll take the call, thank you Lani that will be all”
“Lani hands the handset to Mr Klein and walks out of the office and closes the door behind her.
“Good morning Inspector, what can I do for you?”
“Good morning Mr. Klein. I’m calling because I have got a few calls regarding your stolen Ferrari from a few years ago. I’m wondering what is going on here and if you knew about this.”
“Yes, I am aware of this. A man by the name of Bryce Williams - he’s an American - believes he can find my car. He and his team arrived last night and I plan on meeting with them today.”
“What makes him think he can find your car? Why would he want to do this, fly all the way from America to find your car? That’s absurd!” It’s clear that the Inspector is not at all happy about some American getting involved and possibly solving the case that the Inspector couldn’t.
“I understand how you must feel inspector.”
“Why does he want to do this?” The inspector is getting more frustrated by the minute.
“We have agreed on a monetary settlement if he finds it.”
“Maybe he is the one that stole the car in the first place.”
“If that were the case then he could get more money by selling the car. I don’t think Mr. Williams is in this so he can be in the spot light. Maybe he will just give you the credit.”
“We had better come to an agreement or he will get no help from me.”
“I understand. I will call you when I have more information.”
“Goodbye.” Inspector De Luca hangs up the phone without waiting for Mr. Klein to say goodbye.
Mr Klein hangs up the phone and goes back to the papers on his desk.
“Amelia, do you have a pad of paper in that bag of yours?” Bryce holds out his hand waiting..
“Here ya go.”
Bryce dials Mr. Klein on his cell phone.
“Mr. Klein’s office, this is Lani, how can I help you?”
“Hello Lani this is Bryce Williams, Is Mr. Klein available?”
“One moment please.”
Bryce waits for Mr. Klein to pick up the phone.
“Mr. Williams, this is Wilhelm. How are you?”
“I’m well thank you. How are you?”
“I’m well. How was your flight?”
“It was fine. We are still working through the jet lag.”
“I would guess that.”
“I’m wondering if we could meet today?”
“I was expecting your call and Lani has cleared my calendar for the morning. When can you be here?”
“We can be there in about an hour.”
“That’s perfect. I have made my car available to you and your team. Robert will be your driver.”
“Thank you Mr. Klein, that’s very generous.”
“You’re welcome. Where are you staying?”
“We are at the Westin Palace.”
“Robert will be there in about 45 minutes.”
“Great, we will see you soon.”
“See you.”
Bryce ends the call and puts his phone on the table in-front of him. He relays all the details to Amelia and Courtney.
“We can meet with Mr. Klein in about 45 minutes.” “What are you wanting to find out from the inspector?” Amelia asks.
“I know we have some information about the night the car was stolen but I am guessing that there is more there. Maybe we’ll get to see some evidence that we haven’t seen already. Some additional video of the traffic cameras might prove to be very helpful.”
“I’m have been thinking that this was an inside job.” Courtney adds.
“I was thinking the same thing.” Amelia sets her coffee down and turns to Bryce.
“Because of the way that the security cameras stopped working just as the the heist is about to go down?”
“Exactly.”
“Courtney make a note, let’s see if the inspector looked into anyone’s financials or phone records of the staff of the museum.”
Amelia adds “What about the people in Mr. Klein’s office.”
“Yeah that’s a good idea too. Doesn’t hurt to ask.”
“I’m going to run up to my room and grab a few things and let’s meet back here in 40 minutes or so.”
They all get up and make their way to the elevator.
Fran Morgan manages Mr. Klein’s car museum. She is originally from Russia having been born in Minsk but has been living in Milan for the past 9 years. She lives in a suite that is part of the museum and rarely spends much time away choosing her job over her social life. She speaks English well even with her Russian accent. Many nights she can be seen on the museum’s security cameras walking around the various exhibits. She was orphaned at a young age and spent 10 years waiting to be adopted but she never was. Eventually she turned 18 and was released from the orphanage. She spent a few months living on the streets but eventually returned to the orphanage and was allowed to work there helping with the children. She met Mr Klein while he was traveling to Minsk on business. Mr Klein was quite taken with Fran’s demeanor and friendliness. He chose to offer her a job in Milan and three days later he had moved her to Milan, living in an apartment in the city center. Wilhelm gave her a few options of how he thought she might fit into his organization. When Fran saw the museum and Wilhelm saw the excitement in her face he realized that this was the job for her, making her an assistant to the manager. After the manager moved to Athens, Fran was offered the position of manager and she gladly accepted. She typically gets along with everyone that she interacts with barring one person, Lani.
Robert pulls Mr. Klein’s car into the hotel driveway and shuts the car off. He is a few minutes early so he waits keeping his eye on the front door of the hotel. Soon he gets out of the the car and stands near the front of the car looking for an American with two women. It is usually easy to spot an American in Milan simply by the way they dress. After a few minutes the three emerge from the front doors of the hotel. They pause at the edge of the sidewalk and glance around the various cars there. They see a man dressed as he might be a driver for a businessman, the fact that he is standing next to a limo gives him away.
Robert walks toward them and greets Bryce, “Mr. Williams?”
“Call me Bryce, this is Courtney and this is Amelia, you must be Robert?”
“Yes, pleased to meet you.” Robert extends his hand to Bryce then Courtney and Amelia.
Robert then turns to the car and opens the door.
“Where would you like to go Mr. Williams?’
“We are going to Mr. Klein’s office please”
“Of course.”
Robert pulls out of the hotel and heads down the street. “Mr. Klein’s office is only about 5 minutes away.”
“Thank you, Robert”
The car pulls up to a large 7 story office building. On the top of the building is a prominent sign reading ‘Klein Industries’. Robert passes the obvious parking lot and entrance and heads around to the side of the building to a small gated entrance. The gate opens as they pull up. The small driveway opens to a large courtyard with a circular drive. Robert stops the car and gets out and opens the car for for his passengers. A woman with long brown hair and petite figure holding a clipboard stands by what must be the entrance. As soon as the team has exited the car she walks toward them and holds out her hand to Bryce.
“Good morning Mr. Williams, we’ve been expecting you. My name is Lani, I’m Mr. Klein's assistant.”
“Good morning, I believe we’ve talked on the phone.
“Yes we have.”
“This is Courtney and Amelia.”
“Ladies, nice to meet you.”
“Mr Klein is waiting.” Lani turns and walks in through the double doors and makes her way to the elevator. The doors to the elevator open and Lani passes her ID card past the reader and the button for the top floor lights up. She presses the button for the seventh floor and the doors close. The doors open to an elaborately decorated foyer with a set of double doors at the far side of the room. Off to the side of the foyer is a raised pedestal with a 1904 Model 1 Harley Davidson motorcycle on display. Lani leads them through the double doors into Mr Klein’s office. Mr Klein is seated at his desk but stands as the team enter the room.
“Good morning.” Mr Klein greets the team.
Bryce extends has hand “Good morning Mr. Klein, I’m Bryce and this is Amelia and Courtney.”
“Nice to meet you all, call me Wilhelm. Please have a seat”
Bryce and the ladies each sit down.
“I have had Lani pull all the files that I have accumulated. Some are files from my own internal security as well as the official police reports. Inspector De Luca called me this morning, he was a little agitated. He is concerned that you and your team might cast a pall on his effort to solve this case. I tried assure him that this was not your intentions. Was I incorrect Bryce?”
“Yes you are correct. I want to get this case solved and your car back to you. Inspector De Luca can take all the credit for solving it. I won’t speak to the press or anything like that.”
“I believe that is a wise choice. You will get a whole lot more cooperation from him with that approach.”
“Is is alright if we take these files with us to our hotel where we can review and discuss the details?”
“Of course, These are copies but please bring them back when you are finished.”
“Of course. Do you have anything to add that we won’t find in the files? Do you have any hunches as to who might have been involved?”
“The Inspector and I have talked in depth in the days following the theft, I don’t have anything extra to add and no new information has come to light.”
Bryce picks up the stack of files that were sitting on Wilhelm’s desk and looks through them briefly. Then hands a few to Amelia and a few to Courtney. In one of the file folders were two thumb drives. Bryce holds them up. “Are these videos of the crime scene?”
“Yes, there are several videos taken from the museum and traffic cameras. Also there are videos from the museum in the days leading up to the day and days after. Inspector De Luca wanted to see if the thief might have been casing the place.”
“We will have our people look at these. “ Bryce closes up the file folder and hands it to Courtney. “One more question before we get started. Not too long ago your Board of Directors staged a hostile take over and tried to oust you - that ended in failure. One member was let go. He was caught on camera saying something about you having a secret that you wouldn’t talk about. Was he a suspect in this case?”
“No, No, not to me or the inspector for that matter. The Inspector checked him out and he had a solid alibi, no financial ties or any phone records that lead to anything.”
“Okay I think we have enough to get started. Oh before I forget is Inspector De Luca’s phone number in the files?”
“Yes it is, there is a department number and a direct line number. I would suggest you use the direct line and call him to arrange a meeting. I’m not exactly sure how he might want to proceed.”
“What do you mean?”
“He might not want you showing up at the station, he may want to meet outside the station so as to keep this all quiet.”
“That sounds like a good idea. We will be in touch Wilhelm.”
Bryce stands up followed by Amelia and Courtney. Bryce and Wilhelm shake hands. Wilhelm picks up the phone and says “Lani, our guests are ready to leave.”
The doors open and Lani escorts them to the elevator. “Robert is waiting downstairs for you. Call me if there is anything I can do to help.”
“Thank you Lani.” Amelia responds. Bryce has one of the files open and is reading intently. Bryce, Bryce”
“Yes, thanks you very much for your help Lani.”
Robert drives the team to their hotel drops them off and heads back to Klein Industries. The team gather in Bryce’s room to go over the files that Wilhelm gave them. The files have been divided up by their category. As they are each reviewing the files, Amelia’s phone vibrates. It’s another text from Scott.
“Holly delivered the package to me. I have transferred your payment to your account. Interpol has taken an interest in me so watch out. Holly has disappeared.”
“What do you mean disappeared?”
“I can’t reach her and I can’t track her phone. I’m guessing she has ditched it..“
“I’ll watch my back, Thank you” Amelia responds. Having Courtney around with her involvement with the CIA could prove to be an asset or a liability.
“Should I get a burner phone?”
“Yes, your should. When you get the new phone text me.”
“Alright, Courtney lets take a look at the videos from the museum for the days prior to the theft. Can you put those up on the tv?” Bryce positions his chair so he can see the tv.
“Yeah hang on one second.” After a minute or so she has a video playing.
“So how many different views of the museum are there?”
“We have 5 different views. One of the entrance, and four from around the main floor.”
“Okay let’s look at the entrance. I want to see the day of the theft first.”
A video starts playing showing people entering the facility. There are not a lot of people coming and going. May is not a very busy time in Milan. As the tourists arrive in mass, typically mid June then the numbers really increase. Most of the people visiting the facility are arriving in pairs and look very typical. Bryce is looking for something that looks out of place. Fortunately the video has been recorded using the the latest technology for two years ago. Digital hi def video is so much better that old videos stored on magnetic tape. Bryce and Courtney review several videos, sometimes multiple times. Tracking people as they move through the museum. It can be a time consuming process. The Ferrari is a beautiful car, not like what most people would think of when you say the word Ferrari. The car seems to be the focus of the the entire facility. It has the most dramatic display and many people take photos and selfies. No one spends an unusual amount of time looking at the Ferrari. As Bryce and Courtney are reviewing the videos, Amelia is reviewing some financial records of the some of the people that De Luca had thought were worth investigating.
“Bryce, I’m looking at the financials and I don’t see anything from any of Wilhelm’s staff. You had mentioned earlier about how you thought this might have been an inside job. Evidently De Luca didn’t think about that.”
“Okay, put that on the list of things to talk to De Luca about.”
The team spend the next few hours sifting through more information and building a list of things to talk to De Luca about.
“I think it’s time to give Inspector De Luca a call and see if he will meet with us.” Bryce finds he is number in the files and grabs his phone.
“Inspector De Luca this is Bryce Williams, I’m researching Mr. Klein’s case.”
“Mr. Williams I was wondering when you would call.”
“I’m hoping you can find some time when we could meet.”
“Well that all depends.”
“Depends on what?”
“If you are here to make me look bad to my Caption then I have nothing to offer.”
“That is not my intention. All I want is to find Mr. Klein’s car and return it to him.”
“Are you planning on getting the local papers involved, telling them how you are superior to the Milan Police? Because if that is the case then you are on your own.”
“No, I do not want to do that. I want your help and in exchange I want you to take all the credit and you can explain how you found a new lead that helped you solve the case. Then we leave Milan without saying a word.”
“If that is true then we can work together. If that changes then forget it.”
“Fair enough. Can we meet tomorrow morning some time?”
“I can meet at 10:00 tomorrow morning. Where are you staying? I’ll come to you.”
“We are at the Westin Palace room 2112.”
“I’ll see you at 10:00”
Bryce ends the call and sets his phone down. “Well Mr. Klein was not kidding, De Luca is a bit of a jerk. I’m not sure how helpful he will be.”
“Sounds like a jerk that’s for sure.” Amelia adds.
“Courtney can any of your contacts get some financial information for Wilhelm’s employees?”
“It’s possible but usually those requests are a little tougher to get done.”
“We’ve done this in the past.”
“True but my CIA contacts tend to be more cooperative when the situation has international implications. What are you thinking?”
“Alright, that makes sense. I’m just going back to the inside person concept. Amelia, If you had to pick a person that you would suspect as being the inside person here, who would you pick?”
“At this point I would take a good look at Joey Marks. He is on Wilhelm’s payroll as a handyman and janitor. He would have the access to the facility to be able to turn off the security system, open the door on the loading dock for the the thief and even help get the car loaded onto the truck.”
“Did De Luca look at him?”
“He questioned him, claimed to have an alibi. That’s where it stopped.”
“What about Fran, the museum administrator?”
“She had an alibi and that was the end of it.”
“Okay, It seems like De Luca felt that wasn’t even a possibility so he just ignored it.”
“Courtney, if you can get any financials on Joey and Fran that would be great.”
“I’m wondering if Wilhelm’s position in this community had an affect on how De Luca investigated this case.” Courtney adds.
“Yeah, I agree.” Amelia points out. “If finding out that one of Wilhelm’s own people were guilty then that definitely wouldn’t look good.”
“Let’s keep that all in mind when we meet with De Luca tomorrow.
The team spend the next few hours going through the videos, interrogations and witness statements then break for the evening, Jet lag was still keeping them from operating at their peak.
As the morning arrived the team were feeling much more rested and ready to attack the day. As with yesterday they met in the hotel lounge at about 9:00am to have their breakfast and coffee.
“Courtney, have you got any of the financials on Joey or Fran or Lani?” Bryce asks.
“I got people working on it, but nothing yet.”
“Let me know when that comes in.”
“I spent a little time last night watching some of the videos and I might have come up with something.” Amelia adds.
“What did you find?” Bryce asks.
Amelia interjects, “Two days before the theft a man is seen walking around the museum perhaps casing the place, you never get a clear view of his face plus he is wearing sunglasses inside the museum- that’s weird- and then a guy walking the streets after the theft - caught on traffic cameras - is seen coming out of an alley not long after one of the white trucks just went down the same alley. They both have the build and height and stride. Seems suspicious to me.”
“That’s good work. Is there a sign-in sheet at the museum?”
“No there isn’t.”
“Courtney, can we get some facial recognition working on this?”
“Hang on, I'll send a text right now.”
Bryce’s phone rings. “This is Bryce.”
“Good morning Mr. Williams this is Inspector De Luca.”
“Good morning inspector, I hope you are well”
“Well enough, I’ll be over to your hotel about 9:45”
“That sounds great, thanks”
Bryce ends the call and turns to Amelia “Let’s meet up in my room and get set up for our meeting with Antonio in about 10 minutes.” He finishes his last sip of coffee and gathers up his files and heads toward the elevator.
Antonio arrives at the hotel and parks his car then makes his way into the lobby. He pulls out his phone and calls Mr. Klein.
“Mr Klein, this is Antonio De Luca.”
“Good morning Antonio, how are you?”
“I’m good, I just wanted to talk to you before I met with Mr. Williams and his team. How do you want me to proceed with this meeting.”
“I appreciate you calling me.” Mr Klein pauses for a moment “I think it’s time to solve this case. I have waited long enough for the car to be returned and I’m done waiting.”
“So you want me to share everything I know?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Alright, that’s what I’ll do.”
“Let’s meet at the plaza after your meeting.”
“Alright, I’ll call you when I’m heading there.”
Bryce hears the knock on his door and heads to greet Antonio.
“Thank you for meeting with us Mr. De Luca, please come in.”
“Hello Mr. Williams.”
“May I introduce the rest of my team, This is Amelia and Courtney.”
“Nice to meet you both. How would you like to proceed?”
“We have done a bit of investigating and we have a few questions. Looking through the files we didn’t find any information on the financials for Mr. Klein’s employees. We were wondering why that was.”
“When I began this investigation, of course I interviewed Mr Klein, he assured me that his employees had no part in the crime. Out of respect I did not pursue them.”
“I see.” Bryce isn’t convinced that this was a wise choice. “I want to pursue this further. Can you get this information?”
“I will see what I can do. Maybe I should tell you, I have had conversations with Mr. Klein and he has told me that I can share some additional information with you. When the car was stolen Mr. Klein was a little reluctant to share everything with me. He held back. The deeper I got into the investigation the more Mr. Klein resisted.”
“That’s odd. Why do you think he did that?”
“Mr Klein eventually told me that he didn’t want the thief found. If I did find the car he wanted it back but didn’t care who took it. He didn’t offer any real answer even though I pressed for an answer.”
“Did he ever tell you why?”
“No he didn’t. So I just tried to wrap up the case in a way that satisfied my captain.”
“I never got to fully investigate the case to its full conclusion.”
“Ok, well we have found a few interesting things on the surveillance footage from the museum in the days leading up to the theft.” Amelia starts one of the videos. “Here we see this person walking around the museum and paying particular attention to the Ferrari. Here he is taking pictures of the car. Not too unusual but when you add it to the rest, it seems odd. We believe he is trying to get more information for the night of the theft. Then we see, what we think could be the same man, walking down the street right after one of the white trucks drives down the alley where it was found. Because he is wearing sunglasses inside the museum we think he is trying to make it harder to id him.”
“I reviewed the museum camera footage but not in the days prior, that would have been done if I didn’t get the resistance from Mr. Klein.” Antonio adds.
“Of course, we have got some of our assets looking at the footage trying to id this person. We want to look at the financials of three people, Lani - Mr Klein’s assistant, Fran - the administrator of the museum and Joey the museum handyman. We have some contacts working on it already.”
“I will talk to my captain to see what he thinks about getting the case reopened.”
“I understand, do you have anything else you can share with us that might help us?”
“I’m pretty sure that Mr. Klein knows who stole the car. I haven’t been able to find out who.””
“You think he knows who stole the car?” Bryce is shocked to hear this.
“Yeah, but it's so odd. I couldn’t understand this. If the car was worth $20,000 then I might understand but this car is worth a whole lot more. These aren’t easy to come by.””
“What, like a former business partner or maybe someone has some dirt on him?”
“I have no idea. I think he didn’t want the investigation to be official. He wants to keep this off the books.I think he is trying to protect someone.”
“Alright we are going to focus on the employees and people who were well connected to Mr. Klein.”
“I think that would be good.” Antonio shakes his head.
“Alright then, please let us know what your captain says about reopening the case.”
“I will.” Antonio stands up and extends his hand toward Bryce. “Amelia, Courtney, it was nice meeting you.” Antonio turns and heads toward the door and leaves.
“Well that was interesting.” Bryce fumbles with the papers on the tables and his cup of coffee as he tries to digest the information they were given. He looks at Amelia and then Courtney.
“Very interesting.” Amelia says
“Yeah, I didn’t see that coming.” Courtney shakes her head. “I am guessing that Mr. Klein knows exactly who stole the car. So do we just find the car and forget about who did it?”
Bryce shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head. “I guess, but eventually we’ll find out both.”
As if on cue, Courtney gets an email from one of her contacts. “I just got the financials for Fran.”
“Put it up on the screen.”
“Yeah, here we go.” Courtney opens the email and downloads the attached file.
“Okay let’s see, Let’s go back one month prior to the theft.” Bryce touches the screen and motions scrolling even though it’s not a touch screen.
“Alright, hang on a sec.” Courtney says.
“Alright scroll through a bit.”
“What are we looking for? The usual?”
“Yeah”
Courtney scrolls through the transactions.
“Wait a minute.” Amelia says.” Is this Fran’s only bank account?”
Courtney scans through the email she received with the attached files. “No, there is a second email that arrived just after the first one. Here it is.”
A new file appears on the monitor.
“What are you seeing?” Bryce asks.
Amelia stands up and walks to the screen. “In that first account there were no deposits that look like a paycheck. Small deposits yes, just enough to cover her living expenses. Unless of course she doesn’t get paid much but I doubt it.”
“That’s a good catch.”
“Alright, here we go.” Courtney opens the second file and starts scrolling. “Here is a larger deposit, a direct deposit from Klein Industries for $1,200 at the beginning of the month then again one week later. Looks like a weekly paycheck. Keeps going until five days ago.”
Bryce scans the transactions. “Yeah, got to be a paycheck. Wait a minute, why two different accounts?”
“Doesn’t scream criminal activity.” Amelia responds.
“Does this go back to the day of the theft?” Bryce asks.
“Yes, actually two weeks before.” Amelia replies as she scrolls back.
“Wait! Look at that transaction - three days before the theft” Bryce points at the screen. “She withdrew $800. That is a much larger withdrawal than we normally see.”
“True but no way to track it.” Courtney says.
“Okay, you two continue to look at the financials, I’m going to Mr. Klein’s office. I want to talk to him in person. I want to read his body language.”
“Okay” Courtney responds.
Bryce grabs his phone and texts Robert to let him know that he needs to be picked up and heads out the door.
Scott returns to his office in Athens. The building is a newer design with more modern amenities. His office is on an interior wall that overlooks a central courtyard below. The view wasn’t as good as an outside office but it was more private and considering the nature of the business he conducts, this seemed to work well. Scott sets his coffee and bagel on the desk and opens the safe in the wall behind his desk. He pulls out the carry case that Amelia delivered and opens the case and inspects the device. Reaching into his desk drawer he retrieves a data cable sitting right next to a loaded revolver and plugs the device into his laptop. The screen on the device lights up and displays the message ‘Loading…’ after a brief few seconds the screen reads ‘Ready…’ He launches an app on his laptop labeled ‘XCash’. After the app launches it communicates with the device and establishes a connection with a central financial database. His client will be very pleased to get his hands on this device. Scott’s phone rings - it’s Holly..
“Holly, where are you?”
“In the lobby of your building. Can I stop by?”
“Yeah, come on up.”
Scott disconnects the device and puts it back in the safe. He walks over to the door to his office and unlocks it and returns to his desk. Holly walks in a few moments later.
“Holly, what brings you here?”
“I just wanted to talk to you about the last job.”
“What about it?”
“How much did you make on that job?”
“I paid you a fair amount.”
“What was in the package?”
“You know I don’t discuss these things. My clients value privacy and they know they can trust me.”
“Yeah I get that. Still though.” Holly reaches under her jacket and pulls out a handgun with a silencer on it. “I feel I must insist.”
“Holly, what are you doing?” Scott just looks at her with more disappointment than anything else. He remained very calm considering the situation. This isn’t the first time that someone had pointed a gun at him.
“I just get the feeling that I got cheated.”
“This client has a set of rules that I followed. Surely you can respect that?”
“I really don’t care about your client, all I care about is myself. Seems like no one else cares about me.”
“We aren’t friends, we are colleagues, hell, we are thieves. You do a job and I pay you, and I get paid. It’s as simple as that. I take a whole lot more risk than you do. And I deserve more money.”
“Hmmm, yeah I see what you’re saying, but I think you should throw me a bit more money. So here’s where I’m at with this. If you don’t want to give me more money, I’m thinking a million dollars, then maybe I just kill you and take the device and go straight to your client.”
“You don’t even know who the client is or how to find him! Hell, you don’t even know what the device does and without that you’re screwed. Scott stands up, getting more and more agitated by the minute. Holly raises her gun and aims it at Scott’s head.
“You should just sit back down.” Holly demands.
Scott thinks about the revolver in his desk drawer. He hangs his head for a moment and glances toward the desk drawer. Could he get the gun out and take a shot before Holly got a shot off? Probably not.
“Holly, Let me get the device delivered to my client and get paid. Then I will have money to give you. I don’t have a million dollars to give you.”
“Do you think I’m an idiot? We both know that you have no intention of doing that.”
“I have a hundred thousand in my desk drawer. I can give it to you now.”
“I bet you have more in that safe in the other room.” Holly waves her gun at the door leading to the other room.
“Dammit Holly!”
There doesn't seem to be a way to get out of this situation. “Alright, alright you win. I have a million dollars in the safe in the other room.”
“That’s better, lead the way.”
Scott walks toward the door that leads to the other room with his hands up where she can see them. He opens a door to a tall cabinet and inside is a wall safe. He dials the combination and opens it. Just as he is about to reach in to grab the money, Holly raises her gun and aims at Scott.
“Alright, just step back.”
“Okay, okay.” Scott steps back several feet. Never turning his back to her.
Holly reaches into the safe and grabs a stack of bills. Never taking her eyes off of Scott for more than a second at a time.
“Toss me that duffle on that table.” Holly points to a duffle lying on a side table near Scott. He picks it up and tosses it to her. She takes all of the cash in the safe and puts it in the satchel and starts backing toward the door, Her gun still trained on Scott. He follows her at a distance. She exits the office and Scott signs in relief, sits down at his desk chair and puts his head in his hands and tries to understand what he needs to do next.
Bryce arrives at Klein Industries and makes his way to Wilhelm’s office. Lani greets him.
“Good morning Mr. Williams.”
“Please call me Bryce.”
“How can I help you Bryce?”
“I would like to speak with Wilhelm.”
“Oh I’m sorry, he’s out of the office. You should have called ahead. Mr Klein is a busy man. He should be back in about an hour. Shall I tell him that you stopped by?”
“Yes please do.” Bryce turns to walk out of the foyer but stops and turns back toward
Lani. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“Do you remember where you were on the night the car was stolen.”
“I do, I was here in the office working late.”
“Did you notice anything odd that day or in the days leading to the theft?”
“No, everything seemed normal. Well with one exception.”
“What was that?”
“Mr. Klein was a bit despondent, not his usual self. I remember by 6:00pm he had already had 3 or 4 drinks.”
“Why was that?”
“I’m not really sure. I guess we all have days like that once in a while. It just seemed odd that the theft happened that night.”
“I see, do you visit the museum often?”
“I’ve been there of course but not often.”
“Is the security system monitored by an outside company?”
“No, all of the monitoring is done here, we have a dedicated server that monitors and alerts Mr. Klein of any breeches.”
“Did the system send any notifications on that night?”
“No, it didn’t. I have already told Inspector De Luca all of this. Why are you asking.”
“You talked to Inspector De Luca?”
“Yes, of course. I wanted to do whatever I could to solve this crime. I will let Mr. Klein you stopped by. I must get back to work.”
“Thank you.”
Bryce turns and heads toward the main door. Turning to see if Lani was watching him leave. She was just standing next to her desk with her arms crossed, a look on her face told the whole story about her being annoyed.
Bryce arrives back at his hotel room and finds Amelia and Courtney reviewing more video and Fran’s financials.
“Bryce we found something interesting.” Amelia starts a video from the museum three days before the day of the theft. “Here we see Fran in the museum talking to a man. The man is carrying a small box.No one else is in the museum at the time. He hands her the small box and she opens it. In the box is a semi automatic handgun.”
“Okay that’s odd.” Bryce glances at the both of them.
Courtney adds. “Yeah, very odd. The laws for gun ownership here in Italy are different than the laws in the U.S.”
“Why would she want a gun?” Bryce asks.
“Good question.” Amelia zooms in on the face of the man delivering the gun. “It’s not that same man we see casing the museum.”
“I agree.” Courtney adds.
An email arrives that contains the financial data for Lani. Amelia opens the file and puts it up on the monitor.
“Here is the file with Lani’s financials. Three weeks prior to the theft up til today.”
“Good, let’s take a look.” Bryce turns to the monitor
They all scan through the data together looking for any anomaly. After sifting through many transactions, no oddities were noticed. Bryce goes to his mini fridge and grabs a water. Sitting at the table with the others they sit in silence, thinking of their next move.
Amelia receives a text message. Luckily her phone was face down. If someone would have seen it, it might have caused a conversation that she wouldn’t have enjoyed. She gets up and walks to the mini fridge and discreetly reads the message as she grabs a water bottle. It’s from Scott, he tells her about the encounter he just had with Holly and warns her to watch herself. If having the whole Antwerp situation weighing on her mind this just added to it all. Holly was out for money not revenge, she knows that Amalia doesn’t have money. Maybe she is safe, for now.
“Here’s something.” Courtney points to the monitor. “Lani has a second account. Here is a deposit from another bank for $5,000. That seems odd.”
“Yeah that does seem odd. Do we know where that bank is, what country?”
“Hang on, I can look that up. Here it is, it’s a bank in Monaco.”
“Monaco? Does she have family there or any other contacts?”
“None that we know of.”
“See if we can find the connection.”
“I’ll start digging.”
“Amelia are you okay, looks like you’ve seen a ghost?” Bryce asks her.
“Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”
“I forgot to tell you two. I talked to Lani while I was at Mr. Klein’s office. I asked her where she was on the night of the theft. She told me she was working late in the office. She also told me that the security system is monitored using a dedicated server at Klein Industries. She was a little defensive and was more and more defensive with every question I asked her.”
Coutrney asks, “They have servers at Klein Industries? Who has access to those servers?”
“I don’t know but that is a good question. When I get to talk to Wilhelm I will definitely ask.”
“Wilhelm was out of the office so I will try and set up a meeting.”
Wilhelm arrives back in his office after his out of office meeting. “Lani, do I have any messages?”
“Yes, I put them on your desk. Mr. Williams stopped by to see you. I let him know you were out.”
“Did I have a meeting scheduled with him?”
“No, he just decided to stop by. I told him you are very busy and he should make an appointment.”
“Alright, I’ll give him a call.”
“One other thing, he was asking me questions about where I was on the night of the theft.”
“He’s just trying to find my car.”
“I know, but I was caught off guard. To be honest it was a little unsettling. He was also asking about our security system at the museum.”
“I’ll talk to him.”
Wilhelm went to his office and picked up his messages and leafs through them. Sitting at his desk he checks his emails as his phone rings. “Yes Lani.”
“Mr. Williams is calling.”
“Put him through.”
“Hello Wilhelm, I would like to talk with you. Do you have any time today?”
“Yes Bryce, I’m available for the rest of the afternoon.”
“Great, I’ll see you in about an hour.”
“See you then.”
Courtney waits for Bryce to end his call and then says, “Bryce, I just got an email with more information on Lani’s financials. She is a fiduciary on an account for her mother. The account is based in Monaco. This might be the source of that transaction we were looking at earlier.”
“Do we have the transactions?”
“Yeah, I’m loading that now.”
Courtney pulls up the file on the monitor. “Most of the transactions are typical amounts with the exception of one. Two weeks before the theft there is a deposit for $20,000.”
“That’s a big deposit.” Bryce comments.
“This has to be the source of the money deposited to Lani’s account. I’m guessing she got paid to disable the security system on the night of the crime.”
“I agree!” Amelia adds.
Bryce looks at Amelia with a side smirk. “I bet you’re right.” Bryce turns to Courtney ”Can we track the deposit?”
“I can see what I can find.”
Amelia’s phone vibrates, “Just got a text from our pilot Rich, The problem with the jet was just a loose wire on the switch that indicates that the gear is down. The landing gear works perfectly.”
“That’s good news.” Bryce says. “I’m due to meet with Wilhelm so I’m going to head over there now.”
Bryce walks into the main lobby of Klein Industries just as Lani is walking out. She glances at him but quickly lowers her head. She clearly didn’t want to make eye contact. They pass each other without saying a word. Bryce continues into the lobby and gets on the elevator. The doors open and Bryce steps off the elevator. Wilhelm is standing outside his office looking at the Harley motorcycle on display there as if deep in thought.
“That is a great item to have in your collection.” Bryce says as he walks up
Wilhelm slowly turns to Bryce and says, “Yes, it is. It wasn’t easy to get one of these for my collection. I spent four years looking and negotiating with the former owner. Eventually we arrived at a deal.”
They both stand there for a few more moments just admiring the motorcycle.
“Shall we move to my office?” Wilhelm asks.
“Let’s do that.” Bryce walks toward the door to the office and makes his way to one of the guest chairs. Wilhelm’s desk is covered with file folders and many pieces of paper.
“How is your investigation going? Are you making any progress?” Wilhelm gathers up papers and folders and makes one tidy pile.
“I think we are. I spoke with Inspector De Luca and he shared some insights that we didn’t see in the files.”
“What insights would those be?”
“Well, he seemed to think that you had some ideas about who stole your car but you aren’t interested in finding the thief, you just want the car back.”
“That is true, he is very perceptive, the car is all that matters. If you find the person responsible I won’t press any charges.”
“Well I don’t really understand that but that’s not why I’m working this case. I just want to find the car. I talked to Lani and she wasn’t very forthcoming with much information. I got the idea that she was withholding something. Why would she do that?”
“My guess is that she is just defending my position. When this all happened she realized that I was reluctant to talk and she did the same.”
“Inspector De Luca thinks that you know who stole the car and you might be protecting someone.”
“I don’t know who did this but I have a strong feeling that whoever it was, I don’t want to know. My circle of friends is quite small. I can’t afford to find that the thief is a friend that I can’t trust or even look them in the eye anymore.”
“Okay, let me ask you a question. Does Lani have access to the server that is used to monitor the security at the museum?”
“Yes she does, in my absence she has quite a bit of access and responsibilities. Do you think she did something to the security system on that night?”
“We do, we found a bank account that she is a fiduciary for, it belongs to her mother, that received a deposit of $20,000 just a short time before the date of the theft. Do you know anything about this?”
“No I don't!” Wilhelm stands up and walks to the large window just behind his desk. He stares out the window with his hands clasped behind him.
“Is it possible to look at the logs on your security server on the night of the crime?”
Wilhelm returns to his desk and sits down. “I will have our tech department create an account for you and get you that information.” Wilhelm writes a note to himself.
“One other thing we saw on security cam video at the museum, again in the weeks prior to the theft, we saw Fran meeting with an unidentified man and this man delivers a small box to Fran with a gun in it.”
“I find that hard to believe.” Wilhelm is clearly hearing things that are very upsetting to him and something he didn’t know.
“We can show you the footage. We also saw a withdrawal from her bank for $800 cash the day before. My guess is that the money was used to buy the gun.”
“These are exactly the things I didn’t want to know. I guess I need to stop ignoring these things.”
Bryce pauses for a moment and gives Wilhelm time to process all that he has just learned.
“There is another thing we saw on the security camera footage. An unidentified man is seen looking at the Ferrari, paying particular attention to the underside of the car and taking a lot of pictures. All the while wearing sunglasses inside. Not a criminal offense but certainly odd. Then on the night of the theft he is seen on a traffic camera walking out of an alley where one of the trucks was seen moments before it was dumped. We are working on facial recognition to id him.”
Wilhelm is clearly upset with all this information. He has a few big decisions to make or to ignore. It’s not easy to predict what his next move will be.
Bryce finally breaks the silence and asks, “Is there anything else you want to tell me.”
“No, there isn’t.” Wilhelm stares at his computer monitor to avoid looking at Bryce.
“Alright, I will return to my hotel and I will wait for that account information for the security server. I’ll let you know if we learn anything new. Maybe you should keep an eye on Fran and Lani for now. I’m requesting that you don’t let on that you know anything. If they know what you know, they might do something to mess up the investigation.”
“I think you’re right, I will make some changes to the access that Lani has to all the systems. That’s for sure”
“You may want to review your financials as well.”
“Yes, I will.”
“Good day Wilhelm. I’ll see myself out.”
Bryce leaves Wilhelm’s office and steps onto the elevator. When the doors open he sees Lani in the ground floor lobby talking to Robert. As soon as she sees Bryce she stops talking to Robert and starts walking toward Bryce.
“How was your meeting?” She asks.
“Fine, just fine.”
“Alright, hope to see you soon.”
“Bye.” Bryce and Robert walk to the car and Bryce wonders- That was a very different mood from Lani. Why is she all friendly all of the sudden? Did she find something out, has she been talking to someone? Does she have Wilhelm’s office bugged?
Bryce pulls out his phone and texts Amelia and Courtney- “I’m heading back to the hotel. Let’s meet.”
Courtney responds- “Amelia and I are still in your room working. We have an identity for sunglass man in the museum.”
“Who is it?” he responds.
“Do you really want me to tell you?”
“Yes, tell me!!”
“It is - sorry my phone is dying.”
“Okay Okay, I see what’s going on, this is payback for last month.”
“Yes it is! The man is Sebastian Braun. Wilhelm's childhood friend and former business partner.”
“Wow, didn’t see that coming!”
“I agree, we are getting more information on Sebastian, residences, travel records, financials, the usual.”
“I’m pulling up to the hotel now. I’ll see you in a minute.”
Bryce hurries up to his room. He can’t believe the news. Knowing that Sebastian is their most likely suspect gives them a whole new direction to go now. He opens the door to his room to see Courtney and Amelia still deep into videos, financials and databases that only Courtney has access to.
“I leave for 1 hour and you two crack the case.”
“Well we might have, we still don’t have any real proof that it was Sebastian.” Courtney responds.
“Yeah but this is our first real lead.”
“I had to use a little of the petty cash on this one.”
“How much?” Bryce knew this was going to happen, the only question is how much.
“One thousand U.S.”
“Well that’s not too bad. Someone you have worked with before?”
“Yeah, she has actually helped already on this case, so it seems fair to me.”
“Alright, so we can’t prove that it was Sebastian, how are we going to do that then?”
Amelia interrupts, “All we have to do is follow the money. We show that he paid Lani to disable the security system.”
“Okay let’s do that.” Bryce has a sense of purpose in his tone of voice now. The energy in the room is palpable.
Courtney responds, “I’ve been trying to do that. The money deposited to Lani’s Mom’s account - the one that originated in Monaco- I can’t get the account holders name. The laws and politics going on here are very different from what we usually see.”
“Alright, do we need to get Inspector De Luca involved?”
“I have one more contact I’m working with. He doesn’t want money. He wants something else.”
“What do you mean - something else?” Bryce looks at Courtney then at Amelia.
Amelia gives Bryce the- are you kidding me stare. “Seriously Bryce?!?”
“What, oh ok I get it. So tell him you’ll sleep with him. It's a perfectly good tactic to get what you want. I’ve done it.”
“So have I.” Amelia adds, nodding her head in approval.
“You two are terrible.” Courtney hangs her head.
“Amelia, you sleep with him.” Bryce actually looks like he is being serious.
“Settle down you two.” Courtney starts an email.
“Who are you emailing?” Amelia leans over to get a better view of Courtney’s laptop.
Courtney quickly spins it away from her.
“Alright, so we think Sebastian stole the car. Why? Did he sell it? Not easy to sell a car like that. Could have been sold to a private collector.”
Amelia reminds Bryce, “The person that stole the car left the rams head mark at the crime scene, remember? He is wanted for 5 other crimes, all high dollar items. Doesn’t seem like he’s in it for the money.”
“That’s right, so what was the motive?” Bryce looks through some of the files.
“Maybe he is still upset about the car crash that Wilhelm had that killed Sebastian's girlfriend. What was her name?” Amelia asks as she searches for her name in the files.
“Rose Russo.” Courtney says as she hands Amelia the papers related to Sebastian.
“Why wait so long though. That crash was forty or fifty years ago. When was the car crash?” Amelia asks.
Amelia scans the paper and finds the date she was looking for, “May 10 1971. Then Rose died on May 13th, three days later.”
“Alright, how did we not see this?”
Amelia looks at Bryce with a curious face. “What are you talking about?”
“The Ferrari was stolen on May 13th 2021 - 50 years later. 50 years to the day!” Bryce puts his hand to his forehead then throws his hands in the air “I’m an idiot.”
“Well, if you are an idiot then we all are. None of us caught that one.” Amelia agrees.
“I still want to prove this though. Courtney, have you planned your date with Monaco bank guy yet?”
Courtney turns away from her laptop and gives Bryce a wry smile. Then the same for Amelia who was staring intently at her. “I have the name of the person on the account that paid Lani the $20,000”
“Let me guess, Sebastian Braun?” Bryce asks.
“You got it. Now we have some proof!” Courtney leans back in her chair and smiles.
“Alright, we know Sebastian stole the car and five other very valuable things. Where is he and where is the car? If we find the car we might find the rest of the stolen items. Might be some additional finders fees in there if we play our cards right” Bryce adds.
“Well he has an account with a bank in Monaco, let's start there.” Amelia looks at Courtney.
“I am really working hard on this one, you both know that right?” Courtney shoots them both a glance.
“And we appreciate all your hard work Courtney.” Bryce gives her a thumbs up.
Courtney begins typing on her laptop. Searching for known addresses for Sebastian. After several minutes she blurts out, “I think I found something.”
“What ya got?” Bryce asks.
“Sebastian has a few addresses in three countries, German, the U.S. and Monaco- technically Monaco isn’t a country but. According to his travels he spends most of his time in Monaco. At least that’s what his passport indicates.” His finances show a modest income and I can’t find any other foreign accounts linked directly to him. Not yet anyway. Here is something interesting, in the local Monaco paper - Monaco Life - there is an article about Sebastian, evidently he is quite the gambler, he is a regular at the Monte Carlo Casino”
“Alright, that could be useful. Does he own any properties in Monaco? Doesn’t sound like he sold off all the things he stole. I guess he could have fenced the items and just kept all the money in his mattress.” Bryce says.
“He has an apartment in Monaco with a private garage. That's got to be a pricey place to live, especially in Monaco.” Courtney glances at Bryce.
“Let’s assume that the car is at his place in Monaco, how do we get in there to see it?” Bryce ponders.
“We could break in. Take a few pictures, get out.” Amelia suggests.
“Let's call that plan B” Bryce heads to the coffee maker and pours himself a cup. “What if, hear me out, Amelia you pose as a broker for a client in Dubai, and you are looking for a rare car for him. Like we did for the art thief in Singapore.”
“Then I get him talking about cars without making him suspicious.” Amelia says.
“Then maybe we get him to start talking about the Ferrari. Then maybe he will let you see it.” Bryce is getting more excited by the minute.
“That could work. Low risk.” Amelia nods in approval.
“Courtney, can we confirm that Sebastian is actually in Monaco right now?” Bryce asks.
“We have a phone number for him, I could call and pretend to be a journalist from a local paper and I want to talk to him for a piece I’m working on about living in Monaco. He seems to be a bit of a minor celebrity.”
“Block your number.”
“I’m way ahead of ya.” Courtney dials Sebastian’s number- one ring- two rings- three rings- she was about to give up when someone answers.
“Hello.”
“Hello Mr. Braun, my name is Chelsea Summers, I’m an independent journalist and I was wondering if you would be willing to give me an interview for a piece I’m working on.”
“What type of story is it?”
“The story is about Monaco and the casinos there- I saw a piece in Monaco Life and I want to hear about your experiences.”
“Well I guess, when would you like to meet!”
“How about day after tomorrow?”
“That’s perfect, where?”
“Cafe de Paris, it’s just down the street from the Monte Carlo. Say 10:00am”
“Sounds good, see you there.”
“Well that was easy, well done you” Bryce claps sarcastically.
“Thank you, thank you”
“Now all we have to do is get to Monaco.” Amelia says.
“It’s not that far.” Courtney has already brought up a map with directions.
“We could drive or take the train.” Amelia suggests.
“I like the train, nice relaxing ride.” Bryce says.
“You want me to get a private room?”
“Yeah, let’s leave tomorrow. And get us some rooms for four days.”
“Hey I got a friend who is in London for two weeks, let me text her, maybe we can stay there.”
“Sounds good”
Lani walks into Wilhelm’s office and positions herself in front of him standing there with her arms crossed. Wilhelm looks up from his desk and says “Is there something I can do for you?”
“I just wanted to say I’m a little concerned.”
“About what?”
“Mr. Williams and his team, I’m concerned that they will drag your good name through the mud with this investigation.”
“I don’t see that happening. Mr Williams has been very upfront and cooperative.”
“I don’t think he knows what he’s doing. He’s not even a real detective.”
“He has learned a great deal about all of this. I am confident he will find my Ferrari.”
Lani’s posture changes as well as her facial expression, what was argumentative and confrontational now seems more like she is overly kind and conniving “I would be willing to assist you in your meetings with Mr. Williams. I could pull all the data together for you.”
“I don’t think that will be necessary but thank you.”
Lani spins around and heads for the door.
Scott picks up his phone and dials Holly, she doesn’t answer. He leaves a voicemail for her. “Holly, I’ve been thinking about what you said - about me being unfair about the money. You’re right. Can we meet somewhere and have a drink and talk about this? I’ve got another job and I want your help. Call me!” Scott sets his phone down and leans back in his chair.
No more than two minutes have passed and Scott’s phone rings. “Hello Holly”
“I’m surprised you called me. We didn’t part the best of friends.” she says.
“That’s true, but like I said in the voicemail, I realized what a mistake I made. Can we meet?”
After a long pause she finally says “Ok, meet me at Clown Dogs at 9:00pm”
“I’ll see you there.”
Scott sends a text message “we are meeting at Clown Dogs at 9:00, bring the van”
Bryce, Amelia and Courtney arrive at Courtney’s friends apartment after a relaxing train ride. The apartment is small but has a very comfortable vibe to it. It’s five blocks from the center of action in Monaco. The time has come for Courtney to meet with Sebastian. She walks out of the bathroom after spending a long time getting ready, looking very nice. A little flirty but with a dash of professionalism sprinkled on top.
“You look very nice.” Bryce smiles as he gives her the once over. “Wait, flats!?! With that dress and makeup and hair. Seems out of place. Is this a European thing I don’t know about?” Bryce turns to Amelia as if to get her to agree with him.
“She looks very nice. You look very nice Courtney. Don’t let Bryce get to you. Don’t forget we are talking about a seventy year old man, I don’t think it will matter too much.”
“Alright, Alright. Remember what we talked about on the train.”
“I will”
Courtney makes her way to the cafe with Bryce and Amelia following close behind. Courtney enters the cafe and sees Sebastian sitting at a table by himself. Bryce and Amelia are seated at a table on the other side of the room. Too far for them to be able to hear the conversation but there weren’t any other options.
“Mr. Braun, hello I’m Chelsea Summers.”
Sebastian stands up and pulls her chair out for her and waits.”
“Miss Summers please sit down.”
Chelsea sits down and Sebastian scoots her chair in.
“Thank you for taking the time to meet with me.”
“Of course, I was intrigued by your call. What made you want to contact me?”
“When I saw the piece in the paper on you I knew I had to talk to you. I love Monaco and the casinos. It’s kind of a passion for me, well that and automobiles. I love cars and racing.”
“Well what would you like to know?”
Bryce and Amelia can see by Sebastian’s body language that the meeting is going well. They sip their coffees and try to watch without being conspicuous. Whatever the training was that Courtney received from the CIA seems to be paying off. The meeting goes on for about 30 minutes and then Sebastian pays his bill and stands up, shakes Courtney’s hand and collects the glasses that were on the table and takes them to the bar. He hands them to the man behind the bar and says something to him. The man places the glasses below the counter and Sebastian slips him a note and some money. Then Sebastian returns to the table, says goodbye and leaves the cafe. Bryce and Amelia leave a few minutes later. They all meet around the corner from the cafe and continue to the apartment.
“That looked like it went well.” Bryce exclaims.
“Yes it did, I think he bought the whole thing.”
“What was the deal with the glasses?” Amelia asks.
“I noticed that too” Bryce adds
“I’m not sure. Maybe just being polite.”
“Maybe, What did you find out?” Bryce asks
“He loves to gamble, first off. Then when I brought up my love for cars - exotic and rare cars he really opened up to me. He says he has a few of them. He never mentioned a Ferrari. But he did mention that he has a very special car but he wouldn’t give me the details”
“Okay so what’s the next move then?”
“He agreed to take me to the Monte Carlo later and show me around. I have a bit of a plan. While we are in the casino I’ll make a wager with him that if I win he shows me the car.”
“But what if you lose, then what?”
“I’ll play the best of three card. I really think he wants to show me the car. This will work.”
“I hope so.” Amelia responds
Bryce was skeptical about this plan but the risk factor was low and the reward could really be worth it.
Scott arrives at Clown Dogs and makes his way to the front door. As he enters, the security guard pats him down. He isn’t carrying a weapon and this means that Holly won’t be either. He finds a table on the upper level near the back entrance and orders a drink. For whatever reason the club is quiet tonight, at least by club standards. Scott’s associate, only known as Damian, sits at a table not far away. Damian is a large man standing at least 6 foot 3 inches. He must weigh at least 280 pounds and it seems like all muscle.
Holly arrives and passes through security and spots Scott. She makes her way over to his table.
“Hello Holly.”
“Scott”
“I’m glad you agreed to meet with me.”
“I’m interested to find out if you really had a change of heart or if this is all bullshit.”
“My heart has nothing to do with this. This is all business. I want to continue working with you and split the money evenly.”
“Interesting, why now?”
“I realize how good you are at this and how we can make a lot more money together rather apart.”
“Alright, I'll keep working with you until you cross me again.”
“Great! Let’s have a drink to seal our new deal. You still drinking Jack and coke?”
“Yeah”
“I’ll be right back.” Scott makes his way to the bar and orders two Jack and cokes and returns to the table. He sets the drinks down. Holly has no idea that Scott has slipped some drugs into her drink. Holly reaches for her glass but Scott interrupts her.
“Wait! I want to make a toast. Here’s to us both getting more of what we deserve.”
They touch glasses and Holly takes a generous sip and sets her glass down.
“I never thought you would change your mind Scott.” Holly takes another generous sip.” She blinks repeatedly, rubs her right eye and grabs a hold of the table to keep from falling out of her chair. She tries to speak but she can’t get the words to come out. Scott nods at Damian, he gets up and moves over to Scott’s table. They lift her up by her elbows to get her to her feet and move to the exit. They get her to the alley and into the back of the waiting van without being noticed. Damian hops in the driver’s seat and Scott stays in the back with Holly.
“Let’s go” Scott calls out. Damian drives off.
Courtney changes into evening wear for her night with Sebastian. As she emerges from the bedroom Bryce is caught off guard at how beautiful she looks.
“You look amazing!”
“Thank you.”
“Are you going to walk all the way to the Monte Carlo in that dress and those shoes?”
“Oh I forgot to tell you, Sebastian is sending a car.”
“Classy guy.”
“Yeah he is, you know, for a thief and all.”
“Okay, Amelia and I will be nearby in the casino trying to hear everything. What’s your safe word if things start going sideways?”
“Broadway.”
“Really? Broadway?”
“What were you expecting? Pumpernickel.”
“To be honest, yeah. But Broadway works”
They make their way down to the hotel lobby. The car for Chelsea arrives and Courtney gets in the car and they drive off to the Monte Carlo. Bryce and Amelia start walking, with evening traffic being what it is. Bryce and Amelia just might beat them there. When they arrive Sebastian is waiting in front of the casino. The car door opens and Chelsea extends her hand so Sebastian could help her out of the car.
“It’s nice to see you again Sebastian.” Chelsea says.
“It is nice to see you as well. Shall we go inside.”
“Yes.”
They both enter the main doors of the casino and one of the floor persons looks to Sebastian and says “Good evening Mr. Braun, it’s good to see you tonight.”
“Good evening, Sam. Good to see you.”
“Chelsea, did you know the Monte Carlo opened in 1865?”
“I did not know that. That’s amazing.”
The two of them stroll around the casino and Sebastian gives Chelsea many interesting facts and stories. Bryce and Amelia follow, trying to blend into the surroundings. The casino is busy tonight so blending in seems to be going well.
Sebastian leads Chelsea to an area off to the side of the main casino. Two men are standing at the door. Bryce and Amelia wonder where they are going.
Bryce turns to Amelia and says “If this is a high limit room we might be in trouble.”
“Good evening Mr Braun.” one of the men says.
“Good evening Carl.” Sebastian responds.
“Chelsea, this is the high limit room. Not everyone is allowed in. I’m afraid your friends will have to remain in the main casino.”
“My friends? I don’t know what you mean.”
“Chelsea, or should I call you Courtney? They were at the cafe today. They have been following us all night."
"How did you know?"
"I took your fingerprints off the glass at the cafe. I did a little investigating. Why are you here?”
Courtney's mind races to come up with a new plan. She won’t have Bryce and Amelia as her backup. Being in a public place does give her a little peace of mind. She turns her head and looks over her shoulder for Bryce and Amelia. She spots them as Bryce shrugs. Bryce and Amelia just have to watch as Courtney walks through the large doorway.
“I guess I should tell you the truth.” Courtney says.
“That would be a good thing.”
“I work with a team and we investigate crimes that others can’t solve.”
“So you are working on a crime now?”
“Yes, we are.”
“And what crime would that be?”
“The theft of a rare car from a museum in Milan.”
“So how do I fit into this crime?”
“We believe that you stole the car.”
“What evidence do you have?”
“We have a deposit from you to a member of the staff that had access to the security system that guards the car. We also identified you as being near the museum the night of the crime.”
“What car is it that I am being accused of stealing?”
“A Ferrari 166MM”
“That is a rare car, have you found the car?”
“No we haven’t.”
“So without the car being in my possession, there is no proof.”
“True.”
“Shall we sit at the roulette table, I do enjoy roulette.” Sebastian pulls out the chair for Courtney.
“Okay.”
“Good evening Mr. Braun. Would you like some cheques sir?”
“Yes, let's start with $50,000.”
"Cheques?" Courtney asks.
"In Europe we call chips- cheques. Even in American casinos the dealers will call them cheques."
The croupier gathers $50,000 worth of cheques and pushes the stacks to Sebastian and says “Good luck sir.”
“Thank you.”
Sebastian motions for Carl to come over to the table. Carl leans over so that he can hear Sebastian more clearly and Sebastian won’t have to talk to loudly. Carl shakes his head in agreement and walks back toward the doorway. Instead of stopping at his usual spot he keeps walking. He is headed straight toward Bryce and Amelia. Carl talk s to them and they all walk to the roulette table.
Bryce and Amelia stand just in back of Sebastian as he turns around.
“Would you like to join us?”
Bryce and Amelia sit in the empty chairs that are at the end of the table.
“My name is Sebastian Braun.”
“I’m Bryce and this is Amelia”
“Courtney has told me some of the details about what you are all doing here.”
“We are trying to recover the Ferrari.”
“How about we play a little game and let the wheel and fate decide what happens next.”
Sebastian splits the stacks of $1,000 cheques and gives one half to Courtney and keeps one half for himself.
“What are you doing?” Courtney asks.
“We are going to play a little game. Courtney, you bet 5 cheques and I bet 5 cheques but we can’t make the same bet as each other. We wait for the spin. Then we do the same again. If you have more cheques than me after 5 spins then I will tell you what I know, If I win, you and your team leave and never bother me again.”
“Bryce, what do you want me to do?” Courtney asks.
“I’m feeling lucky, let’s play.” Bryce gently bangs his fist on the table.
Sebastian bets 2 on the first dozen, 2 on the last dozen and 1 on the double street at the 16 and 19. Courtney bets 1 on the first column, 1 on the third column and 1 each on the 8 and 11, 26 and 29, 32 and 35 split. The croupier spins the wheel and the ball. The number comes up, its 11.
Sebastian wins his first dozen bet and is up $1,000. Courtney wins on her 8 and 11 split and is up $13,000.
“Yes, good one Courtney!” Bryce exclaims.
“Courtney, you bet first this time.” Sebastian suggests.
Courtney places 3 on Even and 2 on 17. Sebastian places 1 on 21, 1 on 19, 2 on Black and 1 on 1-18. The croupier spins the wheel and the ball- it drops on 13. Courtney loses all her bets but is still up $8,000. Sebastian wins his bet on Black and the 1-18.
“That’s okay, you’re still up, don’t worry about it.” Bryce finds it hard to contain his enthusiasm.
“Settle down Bryce, let her focus.” Amelia puts her hand on Bryce's forearm to get him to relax.
Courtney only has a $1,000 advantage. She can feel her heart racing and this isn’t even her money. Bryce and Amelia are looking intently. They let her choose the bets, Courtney has more experience with roulette that the two of them combined.
Sebastian bets 1 on the 4/5/7/8 corner, 1 on the 17/18/20/21 corner, 1 on 25/2628/29 corner and 2 on the middle column. Courtney bets 2 on Black, 2 on Even and 1 on 17. The wheel spins and the ball eventually drops, its 4.
Sebastian now has 27,000 and Courtney now has 30,000.
“Seems like you have played this before.” Sebastian says.
“A little, but not for these stakes. We really need to find that Ferrari”
“You can place your bets first, Courtney.”
Courtney bets 2 on the first column, 2 on the third column and 1 on the middle dozen. Sebastian places 5 on the last dozen. The wheel spins and the ball drops, it's 29. Courtney loses all her bets and Sebastian wins $10,000 and now has $37,00 while Courtney has $25,000.
“We are down to our last spin of the wheel. The odds are not in your favor. How about we change the game slightly. We both go all in on either Black or Red you choose first.” Sebastian waits for a response.
Courtney looks to Bryce for help. He just shrugs.
“What if it is zero?”
“I will give you the edge. You win on zero as well.” Sebastian says.
Courtney places all her cheques on Red. Sebastian places his cheques on Black.
The wheel spins and eventually the ball drops on 9 - Red. Courtney wins! Sebastian's bet loses but with Courtney’s bet winning he is at $50,000 right where he started. He asks the croupier to cash him out.
“Let’s move to a table over here by the bar.” Sebastian motions toward a few tables at the end of bar. The high limit area has fewer people milling around so it is a bit quieter. They all find a table and sit down.
Damian drives across town to an abandoned warehouse. Scott monitors Holly to see that she is breathing properly and not going into cardiac arrest. The van pulls up to a roll-up door and Damian gets out of the van and raises the door. He gets back in the van and drives the van into the warehouse. He parks near an office at one end of the building. Scott helps Damian get Holly out of the van and lays her on a bed in the corner of the room. Scott ties her hands and feet to the bed frame.
“What are you planning to do?” Damian asks.
“I want to get my money back.”
“Yeah, I get that. That wasn’t cool of her to do.”
“I’m going to make her talk if it’s the last thing I do.”
“Hey, I’m not in for murder if that’s what you got in mind!”
“That’s not what the plan is. Just leave this to me.”
“Alright, I’m out of here.”
“Dump the van, get out of town for a week.”
Damian walks toward the van and gets in and starts it up. He drives out the roll-up door and speeds away.
Scott checks Holly’s pockets to see if there are any clues as to where his money might be. In her right pants pocket is a small piece of paper with a number on it- 145. Could be a flight number or a time. Scott tucks the piece of paper into his pocket and walks over to a table near the wall and grabs a bottle of water. He opens the bottle and takes a sip then splashes water on Holly’s face, trying to get her to wake up. She gasps and shakes her head. Her eyes open slowly and she searches around trying to understand what has happened. She sees Scott and blinks repeatedly.
“What is going on?” she asks with slow and labored breathing.
“Good, you’re awake.”
“You son of a bitch.”
“Yeah, that’s fair. You kinda started it ya know.”
“Why are you doing this?” her head seems to be clearing somewhat.
“Really? I’ll give you a minute to think about it.”
“You want your money back.”
“Exactly!”
“Well it’s too late. I don’t have your money. I had a debt I had to pay before someone put out a hit on me.”
“Seems like you made your problem into my problem. That’s not cool.”
“You don’t have to do this.”
“What exactly do you think I’m going to do.”
“I don’t know but whatever it is, just get it over with.”
Scott leans down closer to Holly and slaps her across the face.
“This won’t be over for a while.”
Holly writhes and she pulls at her restraints, trying to get loose.
“I hate you!”
“So how are we going to fix this? My money is gone and you are not in a good situation.”
“I can get you some money. I know a guy. He has a vault in is mansion. I have been working this for a while now.”
“Alright, so you want me to let you go so you can go steal from this guy and trust that you will give me some of the money. I will never see you again, guaranteed.”
“Then what can I do.”
“I think I need some time to think about this. I’m going to sleep on this and I’ll talk to you in the morning.”
Scott ties a rag around her head with a knot forced into her mouth then he checks her restraints one more time and walks to the car parked by the roll-up door, gets in, moves the car outside, closes the door behind him and drives off
Sebastian orders a bottle of champagne and four glasses.
“So you have been looking for a car Courtney tells me.” Sebastian looks at each person individually but stops on Bryce.
“Yes we have. Mr. Klein agreed to allow us to work on the case.”
“Mr. Klein, What a wonderful person.”
“You two were good friends a long time ago.”
“That is true but like you said that was a long time ago.”
“So let’s cut to the chase Mr. Braun. Do you have the Ferrari?”
“Let’s say, hypothetically, that I have the car. What are you and Mr. Klein planning?”
“Mr. Klein wants the car back with no repercussions to the one that stole it.”
Sebastian laughs out loud. “Oh that is hilarious. No repercussions, I’m pretty sure that is how he has lived his life. Getting away with anything and everything all the time.”
“I don’t know him at all, I just met him a short time ago. So to answer your question, we would get the car and transport it back to Milan, settle the agreement we have with Mr. Klein, never telling him who had the car, go back to Los Angeles and never see or talk to you or Mr. Klein again.”
“I didn’t steal the car but I know where it is. It is in a private garage on the other side of town. The alarm to the building will be turned off at 3:00pm tomorrow. The keys are sitting on top of the driver's side front tire. I would suggest hauling it away. You wouldn’t want to be driving that car around town. The address of the garage is 2133 Rue de Italie the code to enter the garage is 1971.
“The year Rose died.”
“Yes, you’ve done your homework.”
“You never forgave Wilhelm for that night.”
“No, I didn’t. The events of that night have stuck with me for all these years. I have had to live with the pain of losing her everyday. I became a recluse, avoiding human contact on any level other than the casual interactions I have here with the staff here at the casino. I never felt love again. Seemingly happy on the outside, but most times I just fight off the demons in my head. There have been times that I want to give in to the dark thoughts and just give up.”
“But you didn’t” Amelia says while trying to fight back tears.
“After all these years of trying to forgive Wilhelm or at least stop hating him, nothing will fix that.”
“I’m very sorry Sebastian, I can’t imagine what that’s like.”
“Pray you never do.”
“I think it’s time for me to go. Good luck on all your future adventures.” Sebastian stands up, shakes hands with everyone. Amelia stands up and hugs him.
“Take care of yourself Sebastian. Keep fighting” she whispers in his ear.
“Good night.”
He turns and walks to the door to the main casino floor and toward the front door.
“Well, that was not what I was expecting.” Bryce says.
“No, not at all.” Courtney seems unmoved by all of the rhetoric.
“Alright, tomorrow we need to arrange for a truck to pick up the car and get it back to Milan.”
“I’ll arrange that.” Courtney finishes her glass of champagne.
The next morning the team assembles in the hotel lounge for their morning coffee and breakfast. There is a quiet somber feeling in the air. They each return to the table and sit down, not saying much at first.
“I have found a truck that specializes in transporting expensive cars. The have an excellent record for getting them to their destination on time and undamaged.” Courtney announces.
“That’s great, thank you.”
“Have you contacted Mr. Klein?” Amelia asks.
“No, not yet.” Bryce responds. “I’m not really sure what I am going to say.”
“Yeah, me either.” Amelia adds.
“I guess we could wait until we get to Milan. The train ride will give us a little more time.” Amelia says.
“Yeah, Let’s do that.”
Scott arrives at the warehouse the next morning. He parks his car near the door to the side of the building. This door leads directly into the office area where Holly is being held. Instead of finding her still restrained to the bed he discovers that she has escaped. All that remains is the rag that was tied around her head for a gag. He says to himself- ‘Well I should’ve seen that coming. She always was unpredictable.’ He turns, walks to the door and leaves the building, gets in his car and drives off. Before he even hears the shot ring out, a bullet pierces the windshield and hits him in the left eye socket killing him instantly. The car drifts toward another building and comes to a stop when it runs into a wall. Holly gets up from her position on the roof and breaks down her rifle, packs it up and heads down the fire escape.
“Well that’ll teach ya.” she says.
She gets in her car and opens the carry case that she took from Scott’s vault. Takes a look at it, closes the case and drives away.
Bryce and the team meet in the lobby of the hotel at 2:45 and grab a cab to the address that Sebastian gave them. The truck that Courtney hired to get the car to Milan pulls up to the garage moments after they do and the driver gets out of his truck and walks over to them.
“Good afternoon, I’m Charles.”
“Good afternoon Charles, the car is in the garage.”
“What kind of car is it?”
“It’s a 1950 Ferrari 166 MM.”
“I’m pretty sure I have never transported one of those, I’m not even sure what it looks like.”
“I’ve never seen one either. I’m working for the owner of the car.”
“Well let’s take a look.”
“It’s 3:05, the alarm is probably off” Bryce walks to the keypad on the side of the garage door and keys in the code 1971.
The garage door begins to open. They get their first glimpse of the car. It’s a beautiful red color, shiny and pristine like it just left the factory maybe better than when it left the factory. The body lines flow so well that it makes you think that it is more of a piece of art rather than a car. It’s hard to believe that this car is 74 years old.
Everyone just stands there and admires the car for a few minutes.
“It looks like that car would strain the limits of machine and man.” Bryce says.
“Is that a song lyric?” Amelia asks.
“Maybe.” responds Bryce
“Well let’s see if the key is where Sebastian said it would be.” Courtney says.
Bryce walks to the car and leans over to feel on top of the tire for the key.
“It’s not here.” he says.
“Sebastian said drivers side front wheel.” Courtney gives a wry smile.
“Yeah, drivers side” Bryce points at the tire.
“The steering wheel is on the right - not the left.”
“Oh, right!”
Bryce grabs the key and looks like he is getting ready to get in the car and start it up.
“Whoa, hang on there.” Charles calls out. “You’re not going to try and start the car are you?”
“I was, but now I’m thinking that might be a bad thing.”
“Yeah, very bad. We don’t know how the car was prepped for storage. It probably doesn’t have proper engine oil in it. Starting it would destroy the engine. Not to mention that it probably doesn’t even have gas in it. I will get the car out of the garage.”
“Ok, good call. We will get out of your way and let you get to work.”
Charles uses the winch and pulleys on his truck to get the car out of the garage. The back of the truck has a ramp that lowers to the ground so that the car has the smallest of inclines to get up. He pulls the car onto the ramp, secures it and raises the ramp to the level of the bed of the truck. Then he gently and methodically rolls the car into the truck. Bryce, Courtney and Amelia watch the whole process and are amazed at the precision that Charles uses to load the car. After the car is secured with several straps and covered with a soft cover he closes the door and walks over to the three.
“Once the doors are all closed up, you have no idea that there is a multi-million dollar car in there.” Amelia says
“That is so true.” Bryce nods.
“Charles, you have the address for the destination?” Courtney asks.
“Yes, I do.”
“We are taking the train back to Milan, so we will meet you at the museum at 10:00am tomorrow.” Bryce says.
“The truck will be parked overnight in our secured warehouse and we have a security guard on staff all night.”
“That’s perfect, drive safe Charles.”
“I will, goodbye.”
Charles walks to his truck and climbs in the cab and drives off.
“Well I guess we should head back to the apartment.” Bryce says.
“I called for a cab to pick us up, should be here any minute.” Courtney confirms.
“Courtney, you have been such a great help on this trip. Thanks for all you do.” Amelia says.
“It’s been an interesting adventure. I enjoyed it.”
The cab arrives and takes them back to their apartment. They get packed up and then wait for the cab to take them to the train station.
“I still have a few questions.” Amelia says.
“Like what?” Bryce responds.
“So Sebastian steals the car on the 50th anniversary of Rose’s death. The only woman he ever loved evidently, why steal the car? I mean Wilhelm didn’t have the car back then, he bought the car years later.”
“Maybe Sebastian just wanted to take away one thing that Wilhelm loved.” Bryce says.
“Yeah I guess.” Amelia says
“I’m guessing that Sebastian wasn’t looking for any closure for himself, I don’t think he will ever find that. He just wanted Wilhelm to feel bad.”
“So how do we explain all this to Wilhelm?” Amelia asks.
“I have been thinking about that and I think I will just tell Wilhelm that we have the car and that it will be delivered tomorrow at 10:00am. He didn’t want to know who stole it and I won’t even bring that up. If Wilhelm changes his mind I will tell him that I have made agreements with others that I won’t break.”
“Sounds like the best plan.” Amelia says.
The team boards the train for Milan.
Robert drops off the team at the museum at about 9:30 the next morning. Wilhelm is waiting and greets them.
“Well I must say I had my doubts that you would find my car but you did it. Thank you so much!”
“It was quite the adventure and we have met a lot of interesting people along the way. The truck should be pulling up in a few minutes.” Bryce says.
“It is a beautiful car Mr Klein. A real piece of art.” Amelia adds.
“It will be very satisfying to see it back in its rightful place.” Wilhelm is getting more anxious by the minute.
The truck pulls up and Charles backs up to the loading dock.
“I want to see the car after it has been unloaded. Let’s step inside.” Wilhelm says.
They all walk into the museum and see Fran and Lani standing there. They follow Wilhelm to a conference room and close the door behind them. On one of the side tables sits two buckets of ice and champagne.
“I know it’s early but the occasion demands that we have a bit of a celebration.”
Everyone agrees and nods in approval. Fran opens the bottles and pours several glasses. They each take a glass and wait for Wilhelm.
“I would like to make a toast.” Wilhelm lifts his glass. “To Bryce, Amelia and Courtney, you have done the seemingly impossible and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Cheers!”
Everyone raises their glasses and in unison says “Cheers!”
After about 25 minutes Charles walks into the room and says. “The car is unloaded and sitting in the loading area.”
Wilhelm walks to the door and makes his way to the loading area with everyone following. As he turns the corner and sees the car for the first time in a long time his eyes tear up.
“Wow, it looks beautiful.” Wilhelm says.
He walks around the car, gliding his hand along the body, he opens the door and sits in the seat and feels the steering wheel, grabs the gear shift and gives it a wiggle.
“This is so amazing, I love it! Yet there is something different about the car, I can’t quite put my finger on it.” Wilhelm says.
“It will look even better when it is back on display.” Bryce says.
“That is true, I’ll get my car guy to give the car a once over before going back on display. I think I will have the display redone too.”
“I would love to see how that turns out.” Bryce says.
“Me too” Amelia adds
“Yes, that would be awesome.” Courtney says
“Well Mr Klein, I think it is time for us to leave you to your car and head back to the States.” Bryce says.
“I’ll send you an email with the details of my payment for you and your team's service as per our agreement.” Wilhelm says.
“I will be waiting for your email.”
“Goodbye Bryce, Amelia, Courtney. If you ever return to Milan please contact me.”
“We will.”
They all shake hands then make their way to the front of the museum where Robert is waiting to take them to the airport where Rich and Evan are already doing their pre-flight inspection. Wilhelm goes out to the loading area and stares at the car for a while longer. Fran walks out and stands next to him.
“It’s good to have it back, Wilhelm.”
“Yes, yes it is.”
“Did they find out who was responsible?”
“ Probably, but I told them that I didn’t want to know and this is the end of that.”
“They should have to pay for their crime.”
“I’m letting it go. You should too. I’m going to head back to my office.” he turns and starts to walk away but realizes that he has something else to tell Fran.
“I have made a few changes to who has access to the security system here at the museum. Now it’s only you and I.”
“Okay, so Lani no longer has access?”
“That’s correct.”
“Alright then, good to know.”
Wilhelm makes his way to the front of the museum and gets in his car and drives off.
Fran pulls out her phone and texts Lani
‘Hey I’m going to start working on the designs for the new display for the Ferrari. I would love your input.’
A minute or so later, ‘That would be fun, when?’
‘Tonight at 9:00?’
‘I’ll see you at the museum.’
Lani arrives at the museum a little before 9:00 and Fran is busy taking some pictures of the space where the Ferrari was on display.
“Hi Lani” Fran greets her
“Fran.”
“I think I have a few ideas and I would love to hear your thoughts. Let’s go to the conference room.”
They both make their way to the conference room where Fran has a few designs laid out on the table.
“I had started some things before the car was stolen. I thought they might give us some inspiration. If I had known the car was going to be stolen I wouldn’t have started all this back then.”
“Yeah that was crazy!”
“But you knew for a while that the car was going to be stolen, didn’t you?”
“What? No!”
“Yeah, you did! Don’t lie!” Fran is getting louder as she steps toward a box on one of the side tables. She reaches in and pulls out a gun and points it at Lani.
“What the hell Fran!”
“How much were you paid to disable the alarm system that night? Five thousand, ten thousand?”
“I had no part in this, you have to believe me!”
“No, I really don’t. I have access to the same security system that you do. When Wilhelm told me today that he took your access away I got suspicious. I went back through the logs and I found you were the one that disabled the system. You tried to cover your tracks by erasing the log but you didn’t know that the log is duplicated on another server. That is where I found that it was you.”
Lani rushes toward Fran and Fran pulls the trigger and hits her in the leg. She falls to the floor and grabs her leg as she cries out in pain.
“Oh, oh god. Fran! Stop!”
Fran stands over her with her gun pointed at her head.
“The next one won’t be in your leg.”
Luckily the bullet passed through her leg and didn’t hit any bone or major blood vessels, the bleeding is minimal but the pain is intense.
“Why are you doing this!” Lani cries out.
“You are just getting what you deserve.”
“I still have the money! I can give it to you”
“ I don’t want your filthy money, I want justice!”
“This isn’t justice!”
“This is my justice.”
Fran is just about to pull the trigger when she hears sirens approaching. She turns to look out the window to see a police car pulling up.
“I want everyone to know what you have done.” Fran screams.
Fran hears the front door open and footsteps approaching.
Inspector De Luca stands in the doorway directly in front of Fran with his gun drawn and pointed at her.
“Put the gun down!” he shouts. “Do it now!”
“She has to pay for what she did.”
“Not like this, we have all the evidence we need to send her away!”
“Send her away?, that’s not what will happen, she will get a deal and then never serve a day in prison?”
“If you do this then you’ll be the one serving a prison sentence.”
“I can’t go to prison, I won’t make it.”
“Fran! Put the gun down.”
Fran turns to look at Lani, lying on the floor. Lani’s eyes are begging for mercy, she raises her hand as if to block the shot. Fran cocks her head to one side and pulls the trigger. The bullet finds its mark, hits Lani in the head, brain matter is sprayed all over the floor, her body goes limp. Inspector De Luca fires and hits Fran right in the heart and she falls to the floor. Blood pools under her body. Two other officers that had just arrived enter the room with their guns drawn.
“Stand down! Stand down.” the inspector shouts.
They all holster their guns and look at the two bodies on the floor.
“Dammit! Why did she have to do this? The car was returned, it was all over.” the inspector says.
“Suicide by cop.” one of the officers says.
Bryce and the team are just about to get on the plane when Bryce’s phone lights up.
“Wilhelm is calling.”
Bryce gets the bad news about Fran and Lani and from the conversation Amelia and Courtney can tell that something bad has happened. Bryce eventually ends the call and tells the story to them. Everyone is in disbelief.
“Such a shame. I hope Wilhelm will be okay. It’s been a rough couple years and then this happens.”
They sit in silence for several minutes trying to find a way to make sense of all they have learned. Amelia gets a text message. She reads it and turns to Bryce.
“No one has found out who is counterfeiting those hundred dollar bills.”
“Get a hold of Kansas and ask him to dig into that.” Bryce responds.
“You got anywhere to be Courtney?” Bryce asks.
“As my Grandma used to say, I got nowhere to go and all night to get there.
